According to one embodiment, a first controller is connected to one of a plurality of terminals. A detector is configured to detect a connection between each of the plurality of terminals and an MHL cable. A power supply module supplies electric power to a first connected apparatus connected via a first MHL cable in response to a first connection detection between a first terminal and the first MHL cable. A second controller is configured to connect the first terminal and the first controller, in response to the first connection detection, and to connect a second terminal and the first controller, when a signal is not received from the first connected apparatus via the first terminal at a timing of a second connection detection between the second terminal and a second MHL cable.

In a recording/reproducing apparatus capable of communicating with a data transmission site and the other apparatus through a network, a control unit controls the recording and reproducing of the information based on firmware. A receiving unit receives first information from the other apparatus through the network, the first information including a request of updating of the firmware. An output unit outputs second information to the data transmission site through the network in response to reception of the first information, the second information including a request of transmitting third information used for updating the firmware. A unit acquires the third information from data transmission site through the network to update the firmware.

Recording/reproducing apparatus and method for updating firmware of the apparatus

This invention enables the user to change the display state of the sub-picture signal on the reproducing apparatus side arbitrarily and obtain the display state of the sub-picture signal according to the user's taste. A main picture decoder decodes the compressed main picture data and outputs the main picture signal. A sub-picture decoder decodes the sub-picture data. A sub-picture processing section receives the sub-picture signal decoded the sub-picture decoder and can change the layout position and/or size of the sub-picture signal. A combining section combines the processed sub-picture signal outputted from the sub-picture processing section with the main picture signal and outputs the resulting signal.
