A buffer serves as a sub-memory with respect to a hard disk and performs a data recording/reproducing operation. With this arrangement, even if the access rate of data in the hard disk is not so high, data transfer between the hard disk and an audio I/O, a MIDI I/O, and image I/O can be performed, and audio, MIDI, and video data can be simultaneously and selectively recorded/reproduced.

A main CPU and a sub CPU take share of executing a tone generating process to generate multiple tone signals on a real-time basis without using an exclusive tone generator. The main CPU and sub CPU are formed on a one-chip LSI, thus facilitating realization of a compact electronic musical instrument. An electronic stringed instrument applicable to an electronic guitar, violin etc., picks up string vibrations to produce a direct sound. The direct sound is combined with additional sound which is produced by processing the picked-up signal. The direct sound and the processed sound are controlled according to string vibrations. The picked-up signal is converted into a digital signal which is then processed to produce the processed sound whose characteristic is controlled depending on the amplitude and/or pitch of the picked-up signal.

An automatic playing apparatus is provided which is capable of executing an automatic performance using a complex combination of audio data and sequence data. In the apparatus, a buffer is provided between the hard disk and audio input/output devices and MIDI input/output device, and serves to temporality record and/or reproduce data to or from the hard disk. Event data of the hard disk are selectively read out to the buffer under control of the CPU, and the event data are further transferred to the audio input/output devices and the MIDI input/output device, for executing automatic performance based on audio data and MIDI data.

An electronic stringed instrument employs a plurality of sensors or monitors for instrument performance. Preferred sensors or monitors include a detector for detecting that a string of the instrument is vibrated, an apparatus for evaluating a string-vibration strength or a string touch, an apparatus for discriminating a fret operation position on a fingerboard or a fundamental frequency of a vibration of the vibrated string, a tremolo arm sensor, and a string-bending sensor. These performance input parameters are assigned to various control functions for musical tones generated by a sound source and/or various control functions for effects added to these musical tones by an effector. The function assignment is preferably programmable. In an operation, a music control apparatus controls the sound source and/or effector in response to a performance monitor so that musical tones for the strings can be distinguished from each other or effects for the musical tones can be distinguished from each other. Therefore, a performance with the stringed instrument by a player can be fully expressed.

In an electronic stringed instrument, when a fingered string is plucked, the initiation of vibration of the plucked string is detected by a string vibration sensor to generate timing data representing the vibration initiation timing and number data representing the number of the string which is vibrated. Every time the timing data is obtained, pitch data, timing data and number data are respectively stored in the memory.

During percussion performance, percussion data corresponding to states of percussion sequentially detected by percussion-detection section and tone pitch data corresponding to the sequentially struck percussion members are stored. The stored percussion data and tone pitch data are sequentially read out to generate musical tones, each having a tone pitch corresponding to the tone pitch data, in accordance with the percussion data. Parameters of musical tones to be generated or being generated are controlled in accordance with instructions of a parameter indication section provided on a striking member.

In an electronic tuning apparatus used in electronic stringed instruments such as an electronic guitar, an electronic violin, and so on, at least one string is extended along the fingerboard. Prior to picking performance, a present state of the extended string is examined through picking said string. Preferably, a reference pitch data extracted through the string-picking manipulation is stored. During a live picking performance, a performance-pitch data extracted is converted into a data for defining a properly-tuned sound-frequency in accordance with said extended string state. A musical-tone having a corresponding sound frequency is generated based on data for defining said sound frequency.
