Compounds, pharmaceutically acceptable salts, isomers, or prodrugs thereof, of the invention are disclosed, which are useful as modulators of the activity of liver X receptors (LXR). Pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds and methods of using the compounds are also disclosed.

LXR modulators

A method for identifying and characterizing components of interest in complex samples includes subjecting both a sample and its control samples to chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry analysis to detect ions of the samples. The method includes defining sections of control sample data within specified chromatographic fluctuation time and mass precision windows around each ion or each group of the same ions of question in the test sample data. The defined sections of the control sample data are examined and the maximal intensities are subtracted from respective ions in the test sample. Components of interest are determined from the resultant data of the test sample. The method can be used for identifying molecular ions and/or their fragment ions for components of interest in complex samples.

Precise and thorough background subtraction

A method for detecting and identifying metabolites in biological samples includes subjecting the samples to high resolution mass spectrometry (MS) analysis to detect ions of the molecular species. Mass defect values for the detected ions are determined. The method also includes specifying a predetermined range for mass defect values. Detected ions having mass defect values falling outside the specified range are discarded and those with mass defect values falling within the predetermined range are retained. Species of interest are determined from the retained values. The species of interest include drug metabolites or impurities and/or degradants of a known pharmaceutical sample.
