The present invention is directed to a sealing layer that comprises a combination of polyurethane and poly(vinyl alcohol), the poly(vinyl alcohol) containing an acetoacetate functional group in its molecular structure. The sealing layer is formed from an aqueous sealing composition and shows water resistance and good barrier properties to non-polar fluids. The sealing layer can be used to seal microcells of electro-optic displays.

An electrophoretic medium that may be incorporated into an electrophoretic display includes a dispersion that may be contained in a plurality of microcapsules or microcells or a polymeric continuous phase. The dispersion may include a non-polar fluid, a plurality of first charged particles; and an inhibitor of photo-thermally induced polymerization that inhibits potential cross-linking between the particles and/or the microcells or polymeric continuous phase. The inhibitor may be a compound having an unsaturated hydrocarbon ring and at least one of a hydroxyl group, a carbonyl group, and a nitroso group. The plurality of microcells or polymeric continuous phase and a coating of the particles may include a polymeric material that includes (meth)acrylates.

Photo-thermally induced polymerization inhibitors for electrophoretic media

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic fluid which comprises additive particles. The concentration of the additive particles in the electrophoretic fluid does not exceed 25% by weight and the additive particles are not seen at the viewing side during operation of the display. The resulting fluid can improve optical performance of a display device, such as image stability and contrast ratio. The present invention is also directed to an electrophoretic display comprising the electrophoretic fluid.

The concentration of the additive particles in the electrophoretic fluid is 2.5% to 25% by weight and the additive particles are not seen at the viewing side during operation of the display. The fatty acids may be saturated or unsaturated, branched or unbranched. In some embodiments, the fatty acids are perfluorinated, or partially fluorinated. In some embodiments, the branched polyol will include oligomers of polypropylene oxide or polyethylene oxide. When the additives are included in an electrophoretic medium in a display, the resulting display has an improved contrast ratio and reducing ghosting.

The present invention is directed to an electrophoretic dispersion comprising charged pigment particles dispersed in a solvent or solvent mixture, wherein at least one type of the charged pigment particles has an aggregation size about 2 to about 10 times their primary size and/or has a PDI in the range of 0.1 to 0.3. The electrophoretic dispersion of the present invention is capable of improving both image bistability and contrast ratio through adjusting the size distribution of the charged pigment particles.
