A ceramic waveguide includes: a doped metal oxide ceramic core layer; and at least one cladding layer comprising the metal oxide surrounding the core layer, such that the core layer includes an erbium dopant and at least one rare earth metal dopant being: lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, or oxides thereof, or at least one non-rare earth metal dopant comprising zirconium or oxides thereof. Also included is a quantum memory including: at least one doped polycrystalline ceramic optical device with the ceramic waveguide and a method of fabricating the ceramic waveguide.

A silica-based substrate includes a glass phase and a dispersed phase having carbon, such that the silica-based substrate has a thickness of at least 10 gm. Also disclosed is a method of forming a silica-based substrate, the method including contacting a porous silica soot preform with an organic solution having at least one hydrocarbon precursor to form a doped silica soot preform and heating the doped silica soot preform in an inert atmosphere to form the silica-based substrate.

A system and method for nitridizing a glass article includes supplying a source of a nitridizing gas including gaseous NHto a glass article supported within a furnace assembly and heating the glass article. In some embodiments, the system includes a handle assembly configured to support the glass article within the furnace assembly and a gas supply conduit carried by the handle and configured to supply the nitridizing gas to the glass article. In some embodiments, a method of nitridizing a glass article includes supplying the nitridizing gas such that a residence time of the nitridizing gas at temperatures greater than 500° C. corresponds to a predetermined time period. In some embodiments, a method of nitridizing a glass article includes supplying the nitridizing gas such that the glass articles is exposed to the nitridizing gas within a contact time t.

System and method for nitrogen doping of a glass article

A method of manufacturing a doped polycrystalline ceramic optical device includes mixing a plurality of transition metal complexes and a plurality of rare-earth metal complexes to form a metal salt solution, heating the metal salt solution to form a heated metal salt solution, mixing the heated metal salt solution and an organic precursor to induce a chemical reaction between the heated metal salt solution and the organic precursor to produce a plurality of rare-earth doped crystalline nanoparticles, and sintering the plurality of rare-earth doped nanoparticles to form a doped polycrystalline ceramic optical device having a rare-earth element dopant that is uniformly distributed within a crystal lattice of the doped polycrystalline ceramic optical device.

An optical fiber can include a core comprising silica co-doped with nitrogen and chlorine and an outer cladding surrounding the core. In some aspects, the core can be characterized by an annealing temperature of less than or equal to about 1150&#xb0; C. and/or the core can include a relative refractive index &#x394;in a range of from about 0.15% to about 0.45%.

A high-density optical fiber ribbon is formed by two or more cladding-strengthened glass optical fibers each having an outer surface and that do not individually include a protective polymer coating. A method for synthesizing a metal chalcogenide nanocrystal (NC) material includes reacting a metal material and an ammonium chalcogenide material in an organic solvent material. The method provides that the metal chalcogenide nanocrystal material may be synthesized by a heating-up method at large scale (i.e., greater than 30 grams). Ammonium chalcogenide salts exhibit high reactivity and metal chalcogenide nanocrystals can be synthesized at low temperatures (i.e., less than 200&#xb0; C.) with high conversion yields (i.e., greater than 90 percent).

Metal chalcogenide synthesis method and applications

A quantum memory system includes a doped polycrystalline ceramic, a magnetic field generation unit, and one or more pump lasers. The doped polycrystalline ceramic is positioned within a magnetic field of the magnetic field generation unit when the magnetic field generation unit generates the magnetic field, the one or more pump lasers are optically coupled to the doped polycrystalline ceramic, and the doped polycrystalline ceramic is doped with a rare-earth element dopant that is uniformly distributed within a crystal lattice of the doped polycrystalline ceramic.
