Various embodiments are disclosed, which may include transmitting a transmission schedule for a data burst to a plurality of relay stations in a wireless relay network. The transmission schedule may identify a data channel for transmission of the data burst and a corresponding shared negative acknowledgment feedback channel for transmission of a negative acknowledgment. The negative acknowledgment feedback channel may be shared by the plurality of relay stations.

An application-level bearer setup request generator is positioned at the application level of the communication system. A request is forwarded to a transport level. And a bearer setup request signal generator, located at the transport level, generates a transport-level bearer setup request that is routed to the bearer manager. Bearer setup is performed by the bearer manager and a response is provided through the transport layer to the application level, and back to a communication node when the bearer setup is performed.

Various example embodiments are disclosed. According to one example, a method may include permuting, by a superordinate station in a wireless network, physical resource units to logical resource units, the physical resource units of sequential logical resource units being noncontiguous. The method may also include sending at least one allocation message allocating a block of sequential logical resource units to each of a plurality of mobile stations, each of the allocated blocks being contiguous with at least one other allocated block. The method may also include de-allocating at least a first block of sequential logical resource units from a first mobile station selected from the plurality of mobile stations and a second block of sequential logical resource units from a second mobile station selected from the plurality of mobile stations, the first block of sequential logical resource units being noncontiguous with the second block of logical resource units. The method may also include sending at least one re-allocation message allocating the first block of sequential logical resource units and at least a portion of the second block of logical resource units to a new mobile station.

According to one general aspect, a method may include acquiring a message. In some embodiments, the method may also include determining if a relay station (RS) is allowed to manipulate portions of the message. In some embodiments, the method may also include, if so, generating a message authentication code (MsgAC) based upon a MsgAC key (MsgACK) known to the RS. In some embodiments, the method may also include combining the message with the MsgAC. In some embodiments, the method may also include wirelessly transmitting the combined message to the RS.

According to an example embodiment, a technique may include allocating periodic resources to a mobile station in a wireless network for transmission of voice data, receiving from the mobile station an indication of a start of a silence period, and adjusting, based on the receiving of the indication of a start of silence period, the allocating of the periodic resources from a size and period of resource for the voice data to a size and period of resource for a silence indication (SID) frame. Alternatively, in response to receiving an indication of a start of silence period, the allocating of periodic resources for the VoIP voice data may be temporarily stopped during the silence period.

According to an example embodiment, a technique or method may include receiving a QoS-related message at a relay station in a wireless relay network. The QoS-related message may include one or more QoS parameters for a flow. The method or technique may also include retrieving, at the relay station, the QoS parameters from the QoS-related message to use the QoS parameters subsequently for admission control and/or scheduling for the flow. According to an example embodiment, an apparatus may include a processor. The apparatus may be configured to transmit a handover request message from a legacy serving base station to a target updated base station, the request message including an indication that a mobile station is compliant with an updated specification; and receive a handover response message at the legacy serving base station from the target updated base station, the handover response message including one or more updated system parameters assigned to the mobile station for an updated time zone of the target base station.

According to an example embodiment, a method may include transmitting a Media Access Control Protocol Data Unit (MAC PDU) via a wireless link to one or more mobile stations, the MAC PDU including a plurality of MAC management messages as a pay load, at least some of the MAC management messages directed to different mobile stations, the KIAC PDU including a MAC header having a connection ID field identifying a connection for all (or at least one, or a plurality) of the MAC management messages included in the MAC PDU.

According to an example embodiment, a method may include sending, by a base station in a wireless network, a paging message to a mobile station, the paging message identifying the mobile station. Various example embodiments are disclosed relating to relay networks or multi-hop networks, and also relating to bandwidth allocation for relay networks. According to an example embodiment, a method of allocating bandwidth in a relay network may include receiving at a relay station a first code (e.g., a first CDMA code) from a first station (e.g., mobile station) via a first link, sending a second code (e.g., second CDMA code) from the relay station to a second station (e.g., a base station) via a second link in response to receiving the first code, the second code being one of a plurality of codes assigned to the relay station, and receiving a bandwidth allocation message at the relay station from the second station, the bandwidth allocation message including the second code and indicating an allocation of bandwidth for a transmission over at least one of the first link and/or the second link.

The present invention provides an enhanced H-ARQ scheme that optimizes bandwidth utilization and spectrum efficiency. When an H-ARQ attempt is unsuccessful due to loss or error over a hop between the BS and MS/SS, then only the first node in the hop chain that fails to decode the packet transmits another H-ARQ attempt. The BS determines the first node that fails on decoding based on certain information such as the feedback information sent from the nodes on the path. The previous node of the failed node is then instructed to retransmit by the BS.

Bandwidth efficient HARQ scheme in relay network

Various embodiments are disclosed relating to the optimization of relay station handovers and location update in a wireless network. According to an example embodiment, a request to handover a plurality of mobile stations from a first base station to a second base station may be sent. An identifier associated with the second base station for each of the plurality of mobile stations may be received. In another example embodiment, each of the identifiers is forwarded to the mobile station corresponding to the connection identifier. In another example embodiment, a location update may be performed by sending a message to a network device, such as a target base station, to provide location update information for a plurality of mobile stations. In this manner, one message may be transmitted over a wireless link to facilitate a handover or location update for a plurality of mobile stations.
