Methods, apparatus, application specific integrated circuits (ASIC)s and other embodiments associated with analyzing a cancerous prostate using group-sparse non-negative canonical correlation analysis (GNCCA) with a variable importance in the projections (VIP) score are described. One example apparatus includes a set of logics that acquires a set of features from a plurality of feature views of a region of tissue demonstrating cancerous pathology, produces a ranked set of discriminative features using GNCCA with the VIP score, optimizes computation of the GNCCA using a vector-block coordinate descent (BCD) approach, and provides a prostate cancer (CaP) grade or a biochemical recurrence (BcR) score based on the set of discriminative features. Embodiments of example apparatus may generate and display the CaP grade, BcR score, or set of discriminative features.

Group-sparse nonnegative supervised canonical correlation analysis (GNCCA)

One example apparatus associated with detecting mitosis in breast cancer pathology images by combining handcrafted (HC) and convolutional neural network (CNN) features in a cascaded architecture includes a set of logics that acquires an image of a region of tissue, partitions the image into candidate patches, generates a first probability that the patch is mitotic using an HC feature set and a second probability that the patch is mitotic using a CNN-learned feature set, and classifies the patch based on the first probability and the second probability. If the first and second probabilities do not agree, the apparatus trains a cascaded classifier on the CNN-learned feature set and the HC feature set, generates a third probability that the patch is mitotic, and classifies the patch based on a weighted average of the first probability, the second probability, and the third probability.

Automatic detection of mitosis using handcrafted and convolutional neural network features

Apparatus and methods associated with detecting prostate cancer (CaP) in a magnetic resonance (MR) image of a prostate of a CaP patient are described. One example apparatus includes logics that acquire an image of a prostate, learn a weighted vector, detect salient features in the image of the prostate, and generate a heatmap that facilitates detecting CaP. An image acquisition logic acquires a T2 weighted MR image of a prostate. A learning logic learns a weighted vector based on a set of positive LBP descriptors and a set of negative LBP descriptors extracted from the image at multiple scales. A salient feature detection logic detects salient features in the image based on the weighted vector and a pixel-by-pixel weighted Hamming matching of the image. A prediction logic generates a statistical probability heatmap based on the weighted vector and the weighted Hamming matching of the image.
