The transducer further comprises a nonmagnetic gap covering the main pole, a portion of the nonmagnetic gap residing on the top of the main pole, a first seed layer, at least a portion of the first seed layer covering the portion of the nonmagnetic gap on top of the main pole, a second seed layer residing on the first seed layer, and a wrap-around shield on the second seed layer.

System for providing a perpendicular magnetic recording transducer using a split seed layer

A magnetic disk includes a substrate, a soft magnetic underlayer disposed over the substrate, and a media layer disposed over the underlayer. The underlayer includes a plurality of magnetic layers each containing FeCoN having an atomic concentration of iron that is greater than an atomic concentration of cobalt, and has an atomic concentration of nitrogen that is less than the atomic concentration of cobalt. The atomic concentration of nitrogen is less than eight percent. The underlayer includes a plurality of nonmagnetic layers that are interleaved with the magnetic layers. Each of the nonmagnetic layers has a thickness that is less than one-tenth that of an adjoining layer of the magnetic layers. The media layer contains a magnetically hard material having an easy axis of magnetization oriented substantially perpendicular to both the media layer and the underlayer.

A method and system for fabricating magnetic transducer are described. The method and system include providing a main pole having a bottom, a top wider than the bottom, and a top bevel. A nonmagnetic gap covering the main pole is provided. A portion of the nonmagnetic gap resides on the top of the main pole. A first seed layer is provided. At least a portion of the first seed layer covers the portion of the nonmagnetic gap on top of the main pole. A portion of the nonmagnetic gap on the magnetic recording transducer is removed after the first seed layer is provided. A second seed layer is provided after the portion of the nonmagnetic gap is removed. The second seed layer covers at least the portion of the first seed layer. A wrap-around shield layer is provided on the second seed layer.

Method for fabricating a magnetic recording transducer using a split seed layer

A magnetic disk includes a substrate, a soft magnetic underlayer disposed over the substrate, and a media layer disposed over the underlayer. The underlayer includes a first plurality of layers each containing NiFe having an atomic concentration of iron that is at least about thirty percent. The underlayer further includes a second plurality of layers that is interleaved with the first plurality of layers. The second plurality of layers each contain FeCoN having an atomic concentration of iron that is greater than an atomic concentration of cobalt, and having an atomic concentration of nitrogen that is less than the atomic concentration of cobalt. The atomic concentration of nitrogen is less than eight percent. The media layer contains a magnetically hard material having an easy axis of magnetization oriented substantially perpendicular to both the media layer and the underlayer.

The method and system for providing a perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) head are described. The method and system include providing a metal underlayer and a PMR pole on the metal underlayer. The metal underlayer is amorphous. The PMR pole has a bottom and a top wider than the bottom. The PMR pole includes at least a first ferromagnetic layer, a second ferromagnetic layer, and a third ferromagnetic layer. The first ferromagnetic layer is antiferromagnetically coupled with the second ferromagnetic layer. The second ferromagnetic layer is antiferromagnetically coupled with the third ferromagnetic layer.

Method and system for providing a PMR head having an antiferromagnetically coupled pole

A method and system for providing a current confined magnetic element is disclosed. The method and system include providing a pinned layer, providing a nonmagnetic spacer layer, and providing a free layer. The nonmagnetic spacer layer resides between the pinned layer and the free layer. The method and system also include sputtering a current confinement layer. The current confinement layer includes an insulator and a conductor that are immiscible. The conductor forms a plurality of nano-dots in an insulating matrix. At least a portion of the plurality of nano-dots extends through the current confinement layer.

A magnetic write head includes a seed layer and a magnetic layer on the seed layer. The seed layer includes seed-layer grains having either a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystalline structure with a surface plane substantially oriented in a [111] direction or a hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) crystalline structure with a surface plane substantially oriented in a [0001] direction. The magnetic layer includes magnetic-layer grains having a body-centered-cubic (bcc) crystalline structure with a surface plane substantially oriented in a [110] direction.

The plurality of turns wind around the second pole.

A read/write head and method of making the same are used in a data storage system, such as a disk drive, for perpendicular magnetic recording of data. The head employs a two-layer pole design with a main pole made of sputtered high moment magnetic material, and an adjunct pole made of electroplated soft magnetic film. The main pole is used to write data onto the medium, and is formed over the write coil. The adjunct pole is substantially recessed from the air bearing surface and is formed over the main pole. The present head design significantly enhances the magnetic write field, and substantially reduces side-writing that result in accidental erasure of data in adjacent tracks on the magnetic recording medium.

Perpendicular recording write head having a recessed magnetic adjunct pole and method of making the same

In one aspect, a laminated structure including a first plurality of layers containing primarily-iron FeCoN interleaved with a second plurality of layers containing primarily iron FeNi is disclosed. The structure has an easy axis of magnetization and a hard axis of magnetization, has a magnetic saturation of at least about twenty-three-thousand Gauss, and has a magnetic coercivity measured substantially along its hard axis of magnetization that is less than two Oersted. Additional elements can be added in minority concentrations to form primarily-iron FeCoN layers with increased resistivity. The laminated structure has applicability in various fields in which high saturation magnetization, magnetically soft materials are advantageous, particularly for inductive heads.
