The disclosure relates to an automatic brain-probe guidance systems. Specifically, the disclosure is directed to a real-time method and system for guiding a probe to the dorsolateral oscillatory region of the subthalamic nucleus in the brain of a subject in need thereof using factored Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) via Hidden Markov Model (HMM) represented as a dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN).

Automatic brain probe guidance system

The disclosure relates to a surgical cranial drape, probe for mapping brain of a subject and their methods of use. Specifically, the disclosure relates to a sterile surgical cranial drape embedded with electrodes; an system for mapping physiologically functional brain regions using evoked electrophysiological responses in a first and a second region; and their methods of use in combination or separately.

A real-time method and system to accurately demarcate sub-territories of the subthalamic nucleus area in the brain during surgery, based on microelectrode recordings and a Hidden Markov Model. Root mean square and power spectral density of the microelectrode recordings are used to train and test Hidden Markov Model in identifying the dorsolateral oscillatory region and non-oscillatory sub-territories within the subthalamic nucleus. After the dorsolateral oscillatory region in the subthalamic nucleus is mapped, the microelectrodes are removed, and a macroelectrode is inserted in the mapped dorsolateral oscillatory region for producing deep brain simulation for treatment of Parkinson's disease.
