An adaptive guard band for a ramp load/unload device is disclosed to provide extended data storage. In illustrated embodiments, an adaptive guard band algorithm is configured to format one or more discs or media having a lower capacity device with the adaptive guard band and extended data zone utilizing capacity measurements. The algorithm formats the media to provide a track zero at a first cylinder if the capacity is at or above the threshold capacity and a second cylinder if the capacity is below the threshold capacity to provide the extended data storage zone. A size or width of the extended data zone is variable to provide additional capacity to meet the threshold capacity.

Adaptive guard band for improved data storage capacity

Technologies are described herein for utilizing a head heater to test temperature stability of a head of a storage device and to prevent the head from operating in an unstable temperature condition. A temperature condition of a read/write head in a storage device is ascertained and it is determined whether the temperature condition is within a predetermined range of temperature conditions in which the read/write head exhibits instability. If the temperature condition of the read/write head is within the predetermined range, a power level of a head heater of the read/write head is adjusted to change the temperature condition of the read/write head to be outside of the predetermined range.

Heater to keep reader head in stable temperature range

Technologies are described herein for utilizing a head heater to test temperature stability of a head of a storage device and to prevent the head from operating in an unstable temperature condition. A first power level may be applied to a head heater of a head in a storage device, the first power level configured to simulate a temperature condition in the head. An instability of the head is determined and the temperature condition and the instability of the head are recorded in a memory. The process may be repeated to develop a range of temperature conditions in which the head exhibits instability. The range of temperature conditions and the head heater may then be utilized to prevent the head from operating in an unstable temperature condition during normal operation.

Technologies are described herein for recovering an instable head in a storage device using an internal head heater. An instability in the reader head may be detected, and, in response to detecting the instability, a thermal shock may be applied to the reader head utilizing the head heater to recover the head.

Storage device head instability recovery by heating from head heater

A data storage system may be configured with at least a data storage device that has a controller connected to at least a first data writing transducer and a second data writing transducer. The controller may be adapted to set different first and second healing thresholds for the respective data writing transducers in response to passive data track testing.

Adaptive passive data track erasure healing

A hard disk drive that determines a flying height from a ratio of a first harmonic transfer function and a third harmonic transfer function. The transfer functions can be determined from a response to an impulse function. The impulse function (also known as an impulse response) can be a playback waveform de-convolved by channel data sequence. Any change in the ratio of the first and third harmonic transfer functions corresponds to a change in the flying height. The disk drive may utilize the transfer function ratios in a feedback routine to control the flying height.
