Embodiments described herein relate to techniques for dynamically adjusting information propagation metrics for information propagation paths of network devices based on signal quality. Such techniques may include: obtaining a signal quality parameter for an interface of a network device; making a first determination, using the signal quality parameter, that a signal quality for an information propagation path using the interface is below a signal quality threshold; making a decision, by a signal quality analyzer and based on the first determination, to adjust an information propagation metric by an information propagation metric quantity; providing, by the signal quality analyzer, the information propagation metric quantity to an information propagation decision making device; and programming, by the information propagation decision making device, a new information propagation path that does not include the interface into a hardware component of the network device based on receiving the information propagation metric quantity.

Using signal quality parameters to adjust data propagation metrics

Embodiments of the present disclosure include a pluggable optical line system module for amplification, multiplexing, and demultiplexing of coherent optical signals that can be integrated with a switch-router. Integration may include mechanical, electrical, and software control aspects. One example embodiment of the optical line system is in an industry standard small form factor pluggable module such as OSFP (octal small form factor pluggable) or QSFP (quad small form factor pluggable). When configured in a switch-router, the pluggable optical line is powered, managed and controlled by the switch-router which greatly reduces the cost, space, power and the management complexity of optical line systems.

Network device with integrated optical line system

Certain network switch device can use pluggable transceivers to send and receive data. Transceiver may be capable of operating in multiple different operating modes defined by parameters such as speed. Application data indicating one or more operational modes supported by the transceiver may be read from a memory of a transceiver. An interface may be provided by a network switch device that indicates the one or more operational modes and identifiers of the one or more operational modes. The transceiver may be configured by the network switch device to operate in a selected operational mode based on a selection of an identifier corresponding to the selected operational modes. The selected operational mode, which may require multiple parameters to be configured on the transceiver, may be set using a single command based on the identifier.

Transceiver configuration

A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) includes an optical transmitter and an optical receiver. An optical loopback is coupled to the optical transmitter and to the optical receiver and is configurable to provide in a communications mode a transmitted optical signal from the optical transmitter to an optical output node and to provide a received optical signal on an optical input node to the optical receiver. The optical loopback is further configurable in a loopback testing mode to optically isolate the received optical signal on the optical input node from the optical receiver and to provide the transmitted optical signal from the optical transmitter to the optical receiver. A PIC including the optical loopback enables improved optical loopback testing of optical ports that will be present on network devices including co-packaged optics.

Optical self loopback for co-packaged optics

An auto-equalization network device for optical transmitting and receiving is provided. The device includes a network device having an optical transmitter and an optical receiver. The network device is configured to determine a frequency domain forward transmission loss characterization for a signal transmitted by the optical transmitter, looped back and received by the optical receiver. The device is configured to generate a model in the frequency domain having control points based on the characterization, generate and load finite impulse response (FIR) filter taps into a finite impulse response filter based on the model in the frequency domain. The device is configured to iterate transmission of a signal with frequency-dependent preemphasis by the finite impulse response filter, characterization for the frequency-dependent preemphasized signal as looped back and received by the optical receiver, comparison to previous characterization, adjustment of the control points, and reloading the finite impulse response filter taps, until the comparison meets an optimum, so that the network device is auto-equalized for optical transmitting.
