A light extraction film having nanoparticles with engineered periodic structures. The light extraction film includes a substantially transparent substrate, low index one-dimensional or two-dimensional periodic structures on the substrate, and a high index planarizing backfill layer applied over the periodic structures. Light scattering nanoparticles are either applied in a layer over the periodic structures or included in the backfill layer.

A light extraction film having multi-periodic zones of engineered nanostructures. The light extraction film includes a flexible substrate, a layer of low index engineered nanostructures applied to the substrate, and a high index backfill layer applied over the nanostructures. The multi-periodic zones include a repeating zone of the nanostructures having multi-periodic characteristics. The repeating zone includes first and second sets of nanostructures having different periodic pitches. The multi-periodic zones can be used to enhance the light output and tune the angular luminosity of organic light emitting diode devices.

A light extraction film laminated to a glass substrate for organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices. The light extraction film includes a flexible substantially transparent film, a low index nanostructured layer applied to the film, and a high index planarizing backfill layer applied over the nanostructured layer. A glass substrate is laminated to the flexible substantially transparent film on a side opposite the nanostructured layer and including an ultra-low index region between the film and the glass substrate. The ultra-low index region is used to reduce optical losses occurring with the glass substrate.

In order to enhance the lifetimes of the transferred material, thermal treatments such as annealing are applied to the receptor before transfer, to the transfer layer after transfer, or a combination of them. A thermal transfer donor element is provided which includes a support, light-to-heat conversion layer, interlayer, and thermal transfer layer. When the donor element is brought into contact with a receptor and imagewise irradiated, a portion of the transfer layer is transferred to the receptor. The relative surface texture of the layers can be at least partially controlled, prior to imaging of the donor element, for desired effects in the resulting receptor device. The construction and process of the donor element is useful in making colored images including applications such as color proofs, color filter elements, and organic light emitting displays.

The present invention provides a process for selectively thermally transferring insulators onto organic electroluminescent stacks or layers to electronically isolate adjacent devices upon deposition of electrode material. This can allow the formation of top electrodes for a plurality of organic electroluminescent devices on a substrate via one deposition step to form a single common top electrode or a plurality of electrodes patterned by shadowing due to the presence of the insulators.

The present invention provides an active primer that includes an electronically active material dispersed in a binder. The active primer can be disposed between a thermal transfer donor sheet and a receptor to assist selective thermal transfer of a material from the donor sheet to the receptor to form at least a portion of an electronic device on the receptor. The binder of the active primer can be selected to improve adhesion of the transferred material to the receptor, or to enhance other transfer properties. The electronically active material of the active primer can be selected to maintain a desired level of functionality in the electronic device being patterned on the receptor.
