A method for forming metal articles, such as rods and tubes by aspiration casting is provided in which a hollow frangible mold, such as a glass tube, is immersed at one end in a molten metal bath, a vacuum is applied to the other end controlled with respect to temperature of the molten metal so as to substantially fill the mold with a minimum of turbulence, the filled mold is withdrawn from the metal and the frangible mold is shattered to remove it from the metal article formed within.

Method of aspiration casting

Apparatus for vacuum casting of rods

An improved oxidation resistant iron base alloy article for welding to another article to form a composite product with reduced heat affected zone cracking is provided consisting essentially of about 0.05 to 0.7% carbon, less than 0.3% columbium, about 15 to 30% cobalt, about 18 to 25% chromium, about 0 to 2% manganese, about 1 to 6% molybdenum, about 0.10 to 0.30% nitrogen, about 15 to 30% nickel, about 0.2 to 0.6% silicon, about 0.1 to 2% tantalum, about 1 to 10% tungsten, about 0 to 0.1% zirconium, about 0 to 0.5% aluminum, about 0 to 0.1% lanthanum and the balance iron &gt;23 w/o with incidental impurities not exceeding 0.6% in aggregate. The combined % of columbium and tantalum being at least 0.4% and the combined carbon and nitrogen being &gt;0.2%.

Oxidation resistant iron base alloy articles for welding

A method and apparatus are provided for forming hollow superalloy ingots by melting a molten superalloy electrode by ESR techniques into a molten slag held in a generally cylindrical mold having an axially movable mandrel until the molten metal is adjacent the level of but not over the top of the mandrel, cooling the metal sufficiently to form supporting external and internal walls, moving the mandrel vertically relative to the cooled metal, continuing to melt metal into said slag while moving the mandrel at a rate such that the molten metal remains at a substantially constant level adjacent the top of the mandrel and cooling the formed hollow ingot.

Methods and apparatus for making cast hollows

A process and an alloy are provided for producing high strength material having good ductility to provide a high strength, corrosion resistant alloy including the steps of (1) preparing a body of material having a composition consisting essentially of by weight, about 13% to 18% chromium, about 13% to 18% molybdenum, less than 0.01% carbon, less than about 6% iron, less than about 1.25% cobalt, less than about 4% tungsten, less than 0.5% aluminum, less than 1% manganese, less than 0.5% silicon, and the balance nickel with usual transient metals and impurities in ordinary amounts, and (2) thereafter aging said body at a temperature in the range about 900.degree. and 1100.degree. F to effect an A.sub.2 B ordering reaction in the composition.

High yield strength Ni-Cr-Mo alloys and methods of producing the same

A casting head and clamp arrangement for vacuum aspiration casting of metal rods in glass tubes is provided having a casting head with a generally vertical vacuum passage, a removable fluid pressure chuck in the lower end of said vacuum passage adapted to receive and hold the end of a glass tube, said chuck including a pair of spaced annular support discs, spaced elongate members connecting said support discs, sleeve members having an internal diameter larger than a glass tube to be held fixed on each of support disc annulus and projecting beyond said discs between the elongate members, an elastomer tube fixed at its opposite ends to the sleeve members and having an internal diameter larger than the diameter of the glass tube to be held and fluid pressure means acting between said discs to cause the elastomer tube to decrease in effective internal diameter under pressure to engage and hold the glass tube ends and to release the tube ends when the fluid pressure is released.

A method of decarburizing ESR slags to reduce carbon pick up in superalloys is provided in which NiO is added to the slag prior to remelting the metallic electrode in amounts sufficient to reduce carbon in the slag to a desired level.

Method of decarburization in ESR-processing of superalloys

A method is provided for producing ductile superalloys containing rare-earth metals, lanthanum and yttrium by melting the desired alloy composition by conventional melt practices, adding the rare-earth metals, lanthanum or yttrium to the molten composition, forming the alloy composition into solid electrodes, remelting the solid electrode by electroslag remelting techniques and casting the remelted alloy.
