A wideband holographic surveillance system including a transceiver for generating a plurality of electromagnetic waves; antenna for transmitting the electromagnetic waves toward a target at a plurality of predetermined positions in space; the transceiver also receiving and converting electromagnetic waves reflected from the target to electrical signals at a plurality of predetermined positions in space; a computer for processing the electrical signals to obtain signals corresponding to a holographic reconstruction of the target; and a display for displaying the processed information to determine nature of the target. The computer has instructions to apply a three dimensional backward wave algorithm.

Real-time wideband holographic surveillance system

A holographic surveillance system including means for generating electromagnetic waves; means for transmitting the electromagnetic waves toward a target at a plurality of predetermined positions in space; means for receiving and converting electromagnetic waves reflected from the target to electrical signals at a plurality of predetermined positions in space; means for processing the electrical signals to obtain signals corresponding to a holographic reconstruction of the target; and means for displaying the processed information to determine nature of the target. The means for processing the electrical signals includes means for converting analog signals to digital signals followed by a computer means to apply a backward wave algorithm.

Real-time holographic surveillance system

A method for providing an image of the human heart's electrical system derives time-of-flight data from an array of EKG electrodes and this data is transformed into phase information. The phase information, treated as a hologram, is reconstructed to provide an image in one or two dimensions of the electrical system of the functioning heart.

Heart imaging method

Defects in a structure are imaged as they propagate, using their emitted acoustic energy as a monitored source. Short bursts of acoustic energy propagate through the structure to a discrete element receiver array. A reference timing transducer located between the array and the inspection zone initiates a series of time-of-flight measurements. A resulting series of time-of-flight measurements are then treated as aperture data and are transferred to a computer for reconstruction of a synthetic linear holographic image. The images can be displayed and stored as a record of defect growth.

Acoustic emission linear pulse holography

An apparatus and method for imaging of structural characteristics in test objects using radiation amenable to coherent signal processing methods. Frequency and phase multiplication of received flaw signals is used to simulate a test wavelength at least one to two orders of magnitude smaller than the actual wavelength. The apparent reduction in wavelength between the illumination and recording radiation performs a frequency translation hologram. The hologram constructed with a high synthetic frequency and flaw phase multiplication is similar to a conventional acoustic hologram construction at the high frequency.

Non-destructive testing method and apparatus utilizing phase

An underwater apparatus is described for acoustically inspecting a submerged object at considerable depths such as the lower structural portion of an off-shore drilling rig to determine if the structure has internal defect which cannot be optically detected. The apparatus is intended to operate in depths of up to 500 meters. The apparatus includes an underwater craft for transporting both humans and equipment to the submerged object. The apparatus includes a hand held acoustical and optical probe that is movable by a diver over the surface of the submerged object. The probe includes an array of acoustical transducers that are sequentially activated to acoustically scan the interior of the object. The acoustical transducers are mounted in a flexible support material to accommodate the array to the contour of the surface. The probe additionally includes a real-time display of the acoustical information to assist the diver in effectively inspecting the object. Additionally the probe includes an optical system for visually inspecting the exterior of the surface being inspected.

Underwater apparatus for acoustically inspecting a submerged object

A scan acoustical holographic apparatus and method is described for sequentially acoustically scanning the interior of an optically opaque volume. The apparatus includes an array of acoustical transducers that are coupled to the volume. A plurality of frequency divider means receive high frequency clock pulses and generate transmit electrical pulse signals to the transducers having a frequency that is a fraction of the clock pulse frequency. The phases of the transmit signals are controlled by programmable read-only-memories in accordance with the distances between the transducers and selected focal points within the volume to effectively focus the transducers on the focal point. Receive signals are mixed with the phase adjusted transmit signals to effectively focus the transducers during a receive mode and to generate high amplitude holographic signals when the receive signals are in phase with the phase altered transmit signals. The resultant holographic signals are electronically processed to form an electronic analogue hologram which is utilized to visually display a holographic image of the interior of the volume.

Scan acoustical holographic apparatus and method

A scan acoustical holographic imaging apparatus is disclosed that is capable of displaying an isometric image of an object scanned with acoustical energy in which the image visually depicts surface contour information. The apparatus includes mechanisms for generating X, Y and Z electrical distance signals as an acoustical transducer is scanned in a scan plane over the object. The apparatus further includes mechanisms for generating object signals that are mixed with a holographic reference signal that may be phase shifted to produce a resultant holographic object signal which is used to modulate the brightness input of a CRT display device. The X, Y and Z electrical distance signals are transformed into an electronic isometric projection and applied to the horizontal and vertical inputs of the CRT display.
