For use with a fireplace, a heat exchanger mounted across the top portion of the fireplace with the heat exchanger comprising a heat exchanger core with four identical extruded core sections connected together around an inner spin chamber for the passage of combustion gases and surrounded by an outer spin chamber for the passage of combustion gases, with each core section having a center core passageway for the passage of room air and the heating of the room air by the heat from the combustion gases being transferred to the room air through the heat exchanger cores, and tortuous passageways between the core sections from the outer spin chamber to the inner spin chamber to increase the area of contact by the hot combustion gases to the core sections and to increase the dwell time of the combustion gases in the core to increase the amount of heat transferred to the combustion gases to the room air in the core sections.

Air control apparatus for a fireplace prevents or inhibits the buildup of soot and dirt on the inside surface of the glass doors of the fireplace. A combustion control system for a fireplace for controlling the volume and direction of air circulating through the combustion chamber of a fireplace includes an air control apparatus constructed for insertion underneath a log grate; ducts for conveying an external source of combustion air to an ash pit; an air flow valve in the conveying ducts for controlling the flow of air through the conveying ducts; a filter in the conveying ducts for preventing contaminants from entering the conveying ducts; a thermostat connected to an air flow valve which controls operation of the air flow valve; a forced air heat exchanger functionally connected to the thermostat; a temperature sensing cutoff switch near the heat exchanger; a natural gas log apparatus having a gas flow valve, a burner and ignitor, the gas flow valve and ignitor being functionally connected to said thermostat; and, a booster fan in the conveying means which is functionally connected to the thermostat.

Air control apparatus for a fireplace

A system for heating the air in the room containing a fireplace includes a heat exchanger mounted at the top portion of the combustion chamber of the fireplace to extend across the chimney flue opening and a fan for circulating room air through the heat exchanger in heat exchange relationship with the combustion gases passing from the combustion chamber in a vortex flow through a heat exchange passage in the heat exchanger to the chimney flue opening. There are preferably provided a pair of the heat exchangers mounted in side-by-side relationship to conform with the rectangular shape of the plan view of the fireplace.

A safety system for providing a positive pressure condition in an enclosed space to provide a safe freshair atmosphere in said enclosed space in response to the occurrence of an emergency condition which could introduce smoke or harmful gases into said enclosed space is disclosed.

A portable hose reel for deploying a pair of hoses quickly and easily is disclosed. The hose reel has two flexible hoses wound in a flattened condition one on top of the other on a reel and a handle is provided for use in carrying and unreeling of the hoses.

A portable water driven fan for firefighting applications utilizing positive pressure ventilation is disclosed. A unit including a water powered turbine and a fan is constructed to be light in weight and compact and is capable of delivering a large volume of air sufficient for positive pressure ventilation. The unit is provided with a plurality of spray nozzles which enables the unit to deliver a water mist along with the air.

A fan system for use in firefighting applications employing positive pressure ventilation includes a lightweight portable fan having a water-powered turbine as its driver. A flow control valve is operable to set the system to operate in a plurality of modes including a mode wherein an air stream and a water mist can be directed toward the fire.

A flow system for an engine-pump assembly utilizes the engine cooling water for heating the engine carburetors to prevent icing thereof and includes a flow indicator providing a visual indication of the condition of the engine's cooling water flow.

A pumping system for shipboard use is comprised of a submersible centrifugal dewatering pump driven by a high pressure hydraulic motor mounted directly on the submersible pump, a hose means being connected from the hydraulic motor to a hydraulic pump located up on deck and arranged to be driven by an engine-driven standby fire pump. Quick couple-disconnect couplings are provided so that the pumping system can be operated in a dewatering mode, a fire fighting mode or a mode in which the pumping system supplies a source of power for operating various emergency power tools in holds or under water. Another pumping system has a discharge line from a fire pump arranged to drive a water motor mounted on a submersible pump for driving the same.
