A method for application extension and an image display apparatus using same. The method can include displaying a menu, receiving a selection signal selecting one or more external devices to display an application from the menu, detecting the external devices, receiving first application data of the application from a first external device and second application data of the application from a second external device, displaying an application execution screen based on the received first and second application data, receiving third application data of the application from at least one of the first external device or the second external devices, and displaying an execution screen of the application based on the received first, second and third application data. Also, the first, second and third application data can be processed by the first and second external devices, and the application does not have to be installed in the image display apparatus.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method for operating an image display device includes displaying, on a display of the image display device, a selectable area and a pointer, the selectable area movable in a first direction, automatically changing a display state of the pointer when the pointer is located within the selectable area to indicate movement information of the selectable area, receiving, from a pointing device, a signal to move the selectable area using the pointer on the display in a second direction, wherein the second direction is within a predetermined range of the first direction, and moving the pointer and the selectable area in the second direction in response to the signal in accordance with the movement information of the selectable area.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method for operating an image display device that receives a signal from a pointing device includes receiving, from the pointing device, a pointing signal to display a pointer on a display of the image display device, and a selection signal, wherein the selection signal includes information regarding a command to perform an operation on the image display device, displaying, on the display, the pointer corresponding to the pointing signal, determining whether the pointer is displayed on a most frequently displayed region during an input standby time associated with the selection signal, and performing an operation associated the most frequently displayed region when the pointer is displayed on the most frequently displayed region during the input standby time.

The present invention relates to a method for application extension and to an image display apparatus using same, and more particularly, to a method for application extension wherein an application is executed by using the application data after receiving the same in a device registered in an image display apparatus, and to an image display device using the method.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method for operating an image display device using a pointing device includes displaying, on a display of the image display device, a handwriting region, receiving a pointing signal from the pointing device, determining whether a location of an image based on positional information corresponding to the received pointing signal is included in the handwriting region, and displaying the image corresponding to the received pointing signal at a boundary area of the handwriting region closest to the location when the location of the image is determined to be not included in the handwriting region.

The present invention relates to Digital Television (DTV) controlled by a 3-Dimensional (3-D) pointing device, including a receiving unit configured to receive an operation signal generated by a manipulation for the 3-D pointing device; a display configured to display a movable indicator and at least one pop-up object selectable by the indicator when the operation signal is received; and a controller configured to generate a control signal corresponding to the received operation signal and to make the indicator disappear from the display if the operation signal is not received during a preset first time. According to the present invention, the 3-D pointing device may not transmit an operation signal if the 3-D pointing device is not manipulated during a set time. Accordingly, the period for which the power source of the 3-D pointing device is used can be increased by optimizing the consumption of the power source of the 3-D pointing device.

A method and an apparatus may provide thumbnail images for a display. A plurality of thumbnail images may be generated based on television channels that have been tuned during a first prescribed time period. A channel list including the plurality of thumbnail images may be provided for output to a display. At least one additional thumbnail image may be generated based on at least one additional television channel that has been tuned during a second time period, the second time period being a time period subsequent to the first time period. The channel list may be updated to further include the at least one additional thumbnail image with the plurality of thumbnail images. The updated channel list may be output to a display.
