Gums and methods of producing gums are provided. The present invention includes a gum that has a coating layer composed of a bulk sweetener which has been formed by heating and/or searing the gum. The bulk sweetener on the surface of the gum becomes caramelized and subsequently cooled over time at desirable temperatures. The resultant coating layer includes a hardened and caramelized bulk sweetener that can enhance the flavor, the appearance, the mouthfeel and the overall recreational enjoyment of the gum during use.

A coating process for coating a plurality of centers comprising the steps of: (a) tumbling a plurality of centers in a rotating pan; (b) wetting said plurality of centers with a grossing syrup; (c) distributing said grossing syrup amongst individual centers by rotating said pan for a period of time after wetting; (d) applying a dry charge comprising a gum base and a powdered bulk sweetener on said plurality of centers to absorb said grossing syrup, thereby forming a plurality of powder-coated centers; (e) repeating steps (b) through (d) a predetermined number of times to obtain a plurality of grossed centers; and (f) drying said plurality of grossed centers.

Use of powdered gum in making a coating for a confection

Methods and products for delivering a medicament or agent to an individual are provided as well as methods for producing the product. The product includes a coating having a medicament or agent. The medicament or agent is present within the coating that surrounds a tableted gum center (the water soluble portion and a water insoluble base portion). By chewing the gum, the medicament or agent is released from the product. Continuing to chew the chewing gum creates a pressure within the buccal cavity forcing the agent or medicament directly into the systemic system of the individual through the oral mucosa contained in the buccal cavity. This greatly enhances the absorption of the drug into the systemic system as well as the bioavailability of the drug within the system.
