In some aspects, an apparatus for encoding data for delivery to or for decoding data retrieved from a storage medium comprises a memory device and at least one hardware processor. The memory device is configured to store at least one parameter associated with at least one cryptographic protocol, the at least one parameter comprising one or more of a first cryptographic scheme, a first cryptographic key operation, a first cryptographic key length, and first cipher directives. The hardware processor is configured to generate a first frame comprising a first field for one parameter selected from the first cryptographic scheme, the first cryptographic key operation, the first cryptographic key length, and the first cipher directives and excluding fields for non-selected parameters, wherein the first frame is associated with the data delivered to or retrieved from the storage medium.

The hardware processor is configured to generate, for transmission to the receiver device, a frame comprising a first field identifying a custom or non-custom cryptographic scheme and a second field identifying a first cipher directive of the plurality of cipher directives.

Methods and systems for efficient encoding and decoding communications

A method and apparatus for improving searching in a remote unit of a slotted mode, wireless, communication system. In a slotted mode communication system, the remote unit enters an 'active state' during its assigned slot. While in the active state, a controller in the remote unit passes selected sets of search parameters to a search engine. The order that the searches are performed is based on the measured signal strength and the age of the measurement. The search engine performs searches using the selected sets of search parameters. Searching continues as long as the remote unit is in the active state. When the remote unit enters the inactive state, searching ceases. While in the inactive state, the controller evaluates the results of the searches performed during the previous active state. During the next active state, the next sequence of searching is performed based on measured signal strength and the measurement age corresponding to the measurements made during the previous active state.

Prioritization of searching by a remote unit in a wireless communication system

A method and apparatus of adjusting a search window size by a remote unit in a slotted mode wireless communication system. In a slotted mode communication system, the remote unit is in an &ldquo;active state&rdquo; during its assigned slot. While in the active state the controller in a remote unit passes selected sets of search parameters to a search engine. The search engine performs searches on base stations using the selected sets of search parameters. One search parameter, the search window size, is adjusted in response to a measured signal strength of a first base station signal. The adjusted search window size is used by the remote unit when searching other base stations.

Dynamic adjustment of search window size in response to signal strength

A method of and an apparatus for reducing the average power consumption in a remote unit in a wireless communication system. When a remote unit in a slotted mode communication system receives a general paging massage, it deinterleaves and decodes the raw data samples. Prior to parsing, it compares the decoded data samples with samples stored in a memory. Based on this comparison, the remote unit determines whether or not the message is empty. If the message is empty, the remote unit transitions to an inactive state. By comparing before parsing, the remote unit is able to conserve power by entering the inactive state sooner. If no samples are stored in the memory, instead of comparing, the remote unit parses the message and executes any instructions. If, upon parsing, the remote unit determines the message to be empty, at least a portion of the message is stored in the memory.

Dynamic recognition of an empty general paging message

A method and apparatus for improving the performance of a convolutional encoder used in a slotted mode communication system. In a typical slotted mode communication system a stream of continuously convolutionally encoded symbols is transmitted by a base station. A remote unit, comprising a convolutional decoder to decode the stream of symbols periodically transits between active and inactive states. While in the inactive state the remote unit misses a portion of the continuous stream of symbols. Following the interruption of the stream of symbols, the state metrics of a trellis within the decoder are initialized. Initialization of the state metrics may be such that the decoding process will be biased towards only valid states and away from invalid states. In addition, the initialization may be such that there is not a bias towards any particular state within the trellis.

Slotted mode decoder state metric initialization

The virtual device architecture provides physical and logical device drivers for interfacing software programs executing on a microprocessor of the mobile telephone of a wireless communication system with any of a wide variety of hardware devices connectable within the mobile telephone. The logical device drivers convert commands received from the software applications to commands appropriate for use by selected hardware devices. The physical device drivers receive the converted commands from the logical device drivers and in response to the received commands directly control the selected hardware devices. In one example described herein, the logical device drivers provide translation of core commands necessary to control the selected hardware devices and extended commands for enhanced control of the hardware devices. The logical device drivers operate to convert the extended commands into core commands prior to forwarding the commands to the physical device drivers. By providing logical and physical drivers for use with peripheral devices, the need to provide different versions of software executing on the microprocessor to accommodate different types of peripheral devices is substantially eliminated resulting in a considerable reduction in time and cost associated with developing, maintaining and upgrading software. By providing logical device drivers capable of accommodating both core commands and extended commands, a rich set of peripheral commands can be accommodated thereby further reducing or eliminating the need to provide different versions of software executing on the processor, while nevertheless exploiting the full capabilities of a wide variety of peripheral devices, including state of the art hardware devices such as bit-mapped displays, pointer devices and the like. Method and apparatus embodiments are described.

Virtual device architecture for mobile telephones

A method of and an apparatus for reducing the average power consumption in a remote unit in a wireless communication system. When a remote unit in a slotted mode communication system enters an active state, it receives a sequence of messages. One element of this sequence is a general paging message that command the remote unit to return to the inactive state immediately, thus conserving battery power. The general paging message is followed by several additional elements in the sequence. When the remote unit operates in a poor signal-to-noise ratio environment, for example, it may not receive the general paging message and may, thus, unnecessarily remain in the active state until the end of its assigned slot, wasting battery power. The invention determines whether the element received by the remote unit is a general paging message. If so, the remote unit enters the inactive mode. If not, the invention determines whether the element occurs after a general paging message in the sequence of messages. If so, the remote unit enters the inactive mode without waiting for the end of the assigned slot.

Efficient detection of general paging messages in poor signal to noise environments

The certainties of transmitted bits at predetermined locations in time are determined a priori. This information is then used to set the states of a Viterbi decoder to different state metrics in accordance with the certainties of the transmitted bits. High certainty of a transmitted bit results in resetting the states corresponding to that bit to a high state metric. In contrast, low certainty of a transmitted bit results in resetting the states corresponding to that bit to a low state metric. Resetting the states to different state metrics improves the decoding performance and shortens the time required to converge the decoding trellis by eliminating improbable paths.

A method and circuit for adaptively determining a pilot signal reacquisition time. A searcher subsystem measures a phase of the pilot signal. A control processor measures a magnitude of a shift in the pilot signal phase, compares the measured magnitude to a shift threshold, and decreases the reacquisition time if the measured magnitude is not greater than the shift threshold. The control processor also may compare the reacquisition time to a minimum reacquisition time, and decrease the reacquisition time only if the reacquisition time is greater than the minimum reacquisition time. Additionally, the control processor may increase the reacquisition time to a maximum reacquisition time if the measured magnitude is greater than said shift threshold.

Adaptive reacquisition time in a slotted paging environment

A novel and improved method and apparatus for signal acquisition in a wireless telecommunication system having large transmission delay uncertainty is described. A terminal first acquires the forward link signal from a hub and extracts timing information from that forward link signal. Using the timing information the terminal estimates the time at which a next search window takes place during an access slot, and the time and pseudorandom code state necessary to transmit an access probe so as to arrive at during the search window assuming the terminal is located a maximum distance from the hub. The terminal proceeds to transmit additional access probes at times occurring one access slot period plus a delta time interval after the previous transmission. The delta time interval has a duration less than that of a search window associated with each access slot. Each access probe is processed with various transmission codes the states of which are incremented by an access slot period for each access probe transmitted.
