A system and method for storing measurements. Each measurement may include bulk data and attribute data. The bulk data and the attribute data may be stored using different storage mechanisms. In one embodiment, relational database technology may be used to store the attribute data. Relational database technology may facilitate querying or searching on the attribute data. The bulk data may be stored in a database specialized for storing bulk data.

Optimized storage for measurement data

A system for use in a well having completion zones includes a surface node and a plurality of downhole nodes positioned in the completion zones. A communications link extends into the well and is coupled to the surface node and downhole nodes. The communications link includes channels coupling successive nodes, and the surface node and downhole nodes are coupled in a loop by the channels.

Communications system having redundant channels

A system for use in a well such as an intelligent completion system, includes an electrical cable and a plurality of communication modules positioned in the well. At least a first one of the communication modules is connected to the electrical cable. At least a second one of the communication modules is positioned in a remote location in the well past separately installed downhole equipment. A communications link mechanism that includes an inductive coupler mechanism provides communication between the first and second ones of the communication modules.

Method and apparatus for communicating with downhole devices in a wellbore

A method for use with equipment located downhole in a subterranean well includes providing a model describing behavior of the equipment and measuring a state of the equipment downhole. An indication is received of the state at a surface of the well, and the model is modified based on the indication. The system includes a communication link, a circuit and a machine. The communication link is adapted to furnish an indication of a state of the equipment to the surface of the well. The circuit is located downhole and is adapted to detect the state and produce the indication. The machine is adapted to provide a model describing behavior of the equipment and modify the model based on the indication.

Monitoring performance of downhole equipment

A system for use with a well includes a surface device, a communications link coupled to the surface device and extending into the well, and a plurality of downhole devices coupled to different points on the communications link in the well. The surface device and the plurality of devices are adapted to determine distortions of different portions of the communications link coupling the surface device and downhole devices and to compensate for the distortions when communicating. Transfer characteristics of the communications link portions may be determined, from which equalization parameters may be determined to compensate for distortions caused by communications link portions.
