A settler for decanting mineral slurries includes a tank having a side wall, a bottom and a top, an outlet for a thickened slurry at the bottom of the tank, a first overflow outlet for withdrawing an overflow stream of a clarified liquid, a slurry inlet means for introducing fresh slurry into the tank, the slurry inlet means having a slurry opening through which fresh slurry joins a body of slurry in the tank, and a stirrer having a vertical axis around which the stirrer rotates or reciprocates, in said settler the slurry opening is displaced laterally relative to said vertical axis of the stirrer and said slurry inlet means comprises mixing means. A separation installation includes the above settler and a method for separating a clarified liquid from a thickened slurry of a mineral slurry.

A process for producing alumina trihydrate includes a digestion step, a separation step, and a precipitation step the separation step including: b1) pretreating a slurry from the digestion step by adding a flocculant to said slurry and mixing the flocculant and the slurry, b2) settling the resulting flocculated slurry in a gravity settler vessel, b3) determining a measured value representative of the concentration of solid particles in the resulting clarified liquor, b4) comparing the measured value with a predetermined threshold, b5) feeding said clarified liquor directly to the precipitation step, while the measured value is less than said predetermined threshold, and b6) redirecting said clarified liquor to the pre-treatment step b1), when the measured value is more than said predetermined threshold. An installation may be configured for operating said process.

Process and installation for producing alumina trihydrate by alkaline digestion of bauxite ore

A process is disclosed for treating a Bayer process waste comprising a slurry containing bauxite residue and dissolved aluminum. The process comprises supplying the waste to a settling area to cause the bauxite residue to settle out of the slurry, thereby producing a supernatant liquor. The process further comprises neutralizing the supernatant liquor with a solution containing magnesium and calcium to produce a neutralized slurry containing precipitated hydrotalcites and thickening the neutralized slurry to produce a clarified effluent and a compacted slurry containing the precipitated hydrotalcites, part of said compacted slurry being recirculated to the supernatant liquor to be neutralized and/or directly to the neutralizing step. The clarified effluent and the compacted slurry are disposed of separately. Also disclosed is a plant for treating a Bayer process waste.

Treatment of alkaline bauxite residue

A seal arrangement allowing in-line maintenance and replacement of packing, seals and bushings of a rotary shaft driving a tool extending inside a fluid holding tank. The rotary shaft and associated seals are mounted in an extractable cartridge removably insertable in sealing engagement within a housing projecting outwardly from the tank. A secondary seal comprises an isolation valve mounted to the housing outside of the tank for temporarily providing sealing during servicing of the seals in the extracted cartridge. A tertiary seal is provided for protecting the secondary seal from the tank contents when used in scaling environments. Removable parts of said seal arrangement.

Apparatus and method for refining a process liquor by gravity settling

Method and apparatus for separating components of slurries by gravity settling thereby forming a thickened slurry and a clarified liquid. The apparatus comprises a vessel for decanting a volume of slurry, the vessel having a top and an interior formed by a side wall and a bottom wall for holding the slurry, a slurry inlet means, an outlet for the clarified liquid near the top of the vessel, and a slurry withdrawal apparatus for removal of the thickened slurry from the vessel at or near the bottom wall thereof. The slurry withdrawal apparatus physically engages a portion of the slurry within the vessel interior and transports it through a vessel outlet. The apparatus may include an elongated, rotatable, open spiral-shaped element extending a distance into the vessel from outside near the bottom wall of the vessel, the open spiral-shaped element being in direct and open communication with the interior of the vessel over at least a significant portion of the distance, and a rotational drive mechanism for rotating the open spiral-shaped element, at least intermittently.

Apparatus for production, withdrawal and transfer of highly viscous slurry

The invention relates to a settler for decanting mineral slurries and a method thereof. The settler comprises a tank for holding and decanting a body of slurry to form a thickened slurry as a lower layer and a clarified liquid as an upper layer, the tank having a side wall, a bottom and a top, an outlet for the thickened slurry at the bottom of the tank, an outlet for the clarified liquid layer near the top of the tank, a slurry inlet means near the top of the tank for introducing fresh slurry into the tank, the slurry inlet means having a slurry opening through which fresh slurry joins the body of slurry in the tank, and a stirrer having a generally vertical axis around which the stirrer rotates or reciprocates. The slurry opening is displaced laterally relative to the generally vertical axis of the stirrer and the slurry inlet means is configured to allow the fresh slurry to enter the slurry body without accumulating solids from the fresh slurry at the slurry opening.

Apparatus for and method of settling of mineral slurries

An ultrasonic device for detecting concentrations of solids or positions of solid/liquid interfaces in liquid media, particularly Bayer process liquids. The device comprises at least one piezoelectric element provided with electrodes; electrical circuit elements connected to the electrodes for conveying electrical signals, in use, to and from control apparatus; an ultrasound-transparent window, made of glassy carbon, positioned adjacent to the or each piezoelectric element; a protective matrix, preferably of epoxy resin, embedding and surrounding said the or each piezoelectric element and the electrodes while allowing ultrasonic waves to pass through the or each adjacent window to or from the piezoelectric element, and an external protective cover, preferably comprising an elastomer that is resistant to caustic alkali and has a smooth and non-porous surface, forming an exterior of the device except at the or each window. The use of glassy carbon for the windows makes the probes resistant to corrosion and scaling without impeding the effectiveness of the device. Further improved scaling resistance is provided by an elastomeric material preferably used as the external protective cover.
