A pre-rounding element () is used in a rounding apparatus () for rounding can body blanks from sheet metal blanks. The lower element part () of the pre-rounding element () is displaceable by an actuation element (). This allows the adjustment of the pre-rounding element even during operation of the rounding apparatus. Preferably a measurement of sheet metal blank properties takes place. The measurement may include a thickness measurement and/or a strength measurement of blanks. The pre-rounding element is controlled in dependency of the measurement result. This allows a constant rounding result even with varying sheet metal properties.

Pre-rounding element on a rounding apparatus

When rounding metal sheet sections for forming can bodies by means of a rounding machine, a pre-rounding element is used, whose lower part is deflectable with respect to the upper part by means of an actuating element. Thereby, the joint between the upper and the lower part is executed as a solid body joint whose section modulus in bending during the deflection is different along the joint. Thereby, a uniform impact on the metal sheet may be reached. Furthermore, the separating gap between the upper and the lower part is arranged obliquely, thus reducing the bending of the lower part.

A guillotine shears for sheet metal is provided with two knife carriers movable relative to one another along a working stroke. The knife carriers are connected with one another through at least two leaf spring arrangements. The elastic deformation region of the leaf spring arrangements determines the maximum range of the relative movement.
