A database engine uses bitmap slice indices (BSIs) to combine result bitmaps derived from parent and child tables related via one or more foreign key relationships. To execute a query that involves a parent table and a child table, the database engine parses the query into a parent predicate corresponding to the parent table and a child predicate corresponding to the child table. The database engine executes the parent predicate using a parent bitmap index to generate a parent result bitmap and executes the child predicate using a child bitmap index to generate a child result bitmap. The database engine transforms the child result bitmap, based on the BSI, to generate a transformed child result bitmap having columns that correspond to the primary key of the parent table. The database engine can then combine the parent result bitmap directly with the transformed child result bitmap to generate query results.

Techniques for executing join operations using bitmap indices

Methods and systems for converting user data from disparate sources to bitmap data are described, where user data from a plurality of different data sources are conformed to a conformed user data set using a conform mapping schema, and the conformed data set is then analyzed to create a bitmap mapping schema which provides a mapping from the conformed user data set to a bitmap data set. The conformed user data set is then converted to a bitmap data set using the bitmap mapping schema and the current user data in the conformed user data set. A query user interface (UI) may be provided to allow clients or others to query the resulting bitmap data set.

Embodiments provide techniques for dynamically creating a story for playback using a plurality of storytelling devices. Embodiments identify a plurality of storytelling devices available to participate in a storytelling experience. User input associated with the storytelling experience is received. A system and method configured to dynamically tune the size of a cache stored in a shared memory minimizes the amount of the shared memory consumed by the cache while achieving a desired cache hit ratio. A maximum size of the cache is computed based on a slope, the current cache size, a target hit ratio, and a current hit ratio. The maximum size is then used to dynamically adjust the size of the cache, decreasing or increasing the size based on the computed maximum size.

A system and method configured to instrument code for in-production monitoring provides a polling thread. A main thread executes the code of an instrumented application program and the polling thread executes in the background. Therefore the polling thread does not reduce the performance of the application program execution while monitoring activities are performed. Additionally, the polling thread is configured to simplify the process of instrumenting code for Java management extensions (JMX) by navigating the application program structure to locate administrative objects to bind to JMX and registering the administrative objects with JMX to enable monitoring of the instrumented code.
