For reducing the susceptibility to false alarms and for increasing the detection probability of a passive infrared detector, the actual signals obtained from a first sensor element are continuously compared in a correlator with reference or set signals stored in a read-only memory and/or with the actual signals obtained from a second sensor element monitoring the near region. The correlator delivers an output signal which corresponds to the correlation of both signals which are compared with one another. An alarm signal is triggered when the correlation exceeds a predetermined value, for instance 0.7, and the amplitude has reached a predetermined threshold. The infrared detector affords high security against giving of false alarms and a high detection probability, even in the presence of signals possessing a great amount of noise, but also delivers an alarm signal in the event the detector is attempted to be sabotaged, for instance by covering the inlet optical system.

A sensor element responding to gases and/or vapors is heated in at least two temperature cycles continuously from a starting temperature value to an upper temperature value in accordance with a predetermined pattern which is optimized for selective gases. The temperature is lowered to the starting temperature value in accordance with the same or a different pattern. During the temperature cycles a signal which depends on the composition of the gas or vapor atmosphere delivered by the sensor element is compared in an electronic evaluation circuit to stored values which are characteristic for the presence of selective components in the gas and/or vapor.

In an alarm system a central signal station periodically transmits interrogation signals, preferably in the form of infrared radiation packets to remotely located detectors which transmit a response signal back to the central signal station after differing time delays that are characteristic for the individual detectors and which permit the localization of the source of the response signal. In an alarm state, the detectors respond to every interrogation signal, in the normal operational state to only every m.sup.th interrogation signal, i.e. less often, and in a state of diminishing battery potential to only every small p.sup.th interrogation signal, i.e. even less often. The state of the individual detectors is determined from the frequency with which the response signals are transmitted back by the detectors, that is the ratio of the response signals to the interrogation signals.

Method and apparatus for reporting dangerous conditions

An aerosol detector, for instance a transmission measurement path in a measurement chamber, is provided for the detection of a foreign component in a gas, for instance of incendiary aerosols or smoke in air, and communicates with a reference chamber containing aerosol-free reference gas. The gas in the measurement chamber is periodically exchanged for uncontaminated gas from the reference chamber by a periodical volume alteration of the reference chamber so that, in the presence of aerosols, the aerosol concentration in the measurement chamber and the output signal of the aerosol detector are modulated. The modulation, i.e. the variable portion of the output signal, is an indication of the aerosol concentration or the smoke density. A particularly suitable application is smoke detection in air for the purpose of fire or incendiary reporting or for monitoring air pollution.

The optical arrangement for an infrared intrusion detector containing a plurality of separate radiation receiving regions or fields of view is provided with a first focussing optic or optical system, for instance a Fresnel lense which receives with its entire surface or area the infrared radiation which arrives from all of the receiving regions and delivers such received radiation to a multiplicity of further focussing means, for instance to individual reflectors. These reflectors are correlated in each instance to one of the receiving regions or fields of view and focus the radiation arriving from such receiving region upon a sensor element. In this way there is attained the beneficial result of optimum utilization of the infrared radiation which is available and the sensitivity of the infrared intrusion detector can be increased. The dimensions of the optical arrangement and the intrusion detector can be maintained small and relatively imperceptible.

In an alarm installation containing a central evaluation unit and alarm devices arranged remotely therefrom, the transmission of energy from a radiation source and the reporting back of the signal occurs exclusively according to optical principles by means of radiation conducting elements, so-called light guides or conductors, by means of which the alarm devices are connected with the evaluation device. The alarm devices contain a preferably high-ohm sensor element, for instance a smoke-sensitive ionization chamber, whose operating voltage is infed by means of a solar cell which is irradiated by a light guide and whose output signal is fed back to the evaluation device by means of a high-ohm electrical transducer and a light guide. Such type alarm installation preferably is used for fire detection purposes, for gas, smoke temperature detection or intrusion protection, and is particularly suitable for use in an explosion-endangered environment or one subjected to electrical disturbances.
