Pigment formulations contain a) a finely divided pigment, b) at least one colorant which has at least one external basic group, c) at least one acidic and/or neutral phosphoric ester and d) if required, further assistants conventionally used in such formulations. The formulations are used for pigmenting printing inks and lakes. The printing inks, pastes and lakes produced using the formulations have substantially better flow behavior than the inks and lakes obtained using prior art pigments.

A luster pigment is described which is made up of a metal oxide film on a colored platelet-like support. The support is a pigment having a length of 3-150 .mu.m, a width of 3-150 .mu.m, and a thickness of 0.1-2 .mu.m. A process is described for the preparation of the pigment in which an organic platelet-like pigment is coated with a metal-oxide film by chemical vapor deposition. The preferred platelet-like organic pigment is .beta.-copper phthalocyanine.

Novel bisisoindoline pigments of the formula (I) ##STR1## where the radicals A are identical or different radicals of a methylene-active compound, X is a divalent radical and the rings L are each unsubstituted or substituted, possess good fastness properties and are therefore suitable for a very wide range of applications, for example for pigmenting plastics, printing inks and surface coatings.

Novel isoindoline colorants of the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is phenyl or 1-naphthyl, which are unsubstituted or substituted by groups which do not confer solubility, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, independently of one another, are C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or benzyl or R.sup.3 is hydrogen and R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or benzyl, or is phenyl or 1-naphthyl which are unsubstituted or substituted by groups which do not confer solubility, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 being identical or different, and the use of these colorants. In surface coatings, printing inks and plastics, the products give brilliant yellow to red colorations, which exhibit very good lightfastness and fastness to weathering, and good fastness to overcoating.

A process for the preparation of an easily dispersible pigment, of high tinctorial strength, having the formula ##STR1## where A is cyano, carbonamido, N-phenyl or N-(chlorophenyl)-carbonamido or is a 5-membered or 6-membered unsaturated heterocyclic ring fused to a benzene ring and B is a barbituric acid radical, by condensing 1-amino-3-imino-insoindoline with the appropriate cyanomethylene compound at pH&gt;7 and then with barbituric acid at pH 1.5-3.5, in an aqueous medium or in water, at from 20.degree. to 150 C. The process may be used to produce high-hiding or transparent pigments which give brilliant colorations.

Preparation of pigments having improved technological properties

A .beta.-copper phthalocyanine pigment which consists, to the extent of more than 50% by weight, of flakes which are not less than 10 .mu.m long and 3 .mu.m wide, the length:width ratio being not less than 3.3:1, and which has a reflection maximum between 610 and 640 nm and another between 710 and 740 nm. In surface coatings and printing inks the pigment gives optical effects resembling those of metallic pigments. In a baking finish, reddish brown to bluish gray colorations with a metallic reflectance are obtained.

Flaky mica pigments coated with metal oxides are prepared by oxidizing vaporizable metal carbonyls to metal oxides with oxygen at an elevated temperature in the presence of mica flakes which are kept in motion. The amount of carbonyls introduced into the reaction zone does not exceed 5% by volume of the amount of other gases introduced. The coated mica pigments are employed as pigments in surface coatings, plastics and glasses.

To prepare a colored pigment which has a metallic luster and consists of a metallic core whose surface is at least partially covered with an iron oxide, iron pentacarbonyl is oxidized with oxygen in a fluidized bed of the metallic cores at above 100.degree. C. The amount of iron pentacarbonyl vapor introduced into the fluidized bed must not exceed 5% by volume, based on the total gases introduced into the fluidized bed over the same period of time.
