A UV-curable and recyclable thermoset shape memory polymer is provided. The polymer includes a vitrimer-based monomer and a photoinitiator. The vitrimer-based monomer includes a first unit rendering a high chain stiffness upon polymerization of the monomer, and a second photopolymerizable unit for photopolymerization of the monomer under a UV irradiation. The polymer has high strength, high stiffness, high recovery stress, high energy storage, reasonable recycling efficiency, and is printable using SLA with high resolution.

High performance and recyclable thermoset ink for 3D or 4D printing

Provided is a method for altering properties of tension programmed fibrous shape memory polymer. The method can include applying a protective coating to the tension programmed shape memory polymer, then applying a supportive coating to the tension programmed shape memory polymer to form a coated fiber. The protective coating avoids contact between the shape memory polymer and chemicals used in the supportive coating that can decompensate the shape memory polymer.

The methods for molecular scale healing can include heating a composition including a thermoplastic such as fibers, particles or spheres to a level at or above the thermoplastic's melting point, then cooling of the composition below the melting temperature of the thermoplastic. The compositions have the ability to close macroscopic defects repeatedly even if another wound/damage occurs in a previously healed/repaired area.

The present disclosure provides for shape memory proppants, methods for making shape memory proppants, and methods of using shape memory proppants, and the like. The strong expandable proppants of the present disclosure may be used in maintaining fracture openings.

Methods for temporary fracture isolation are provided. An existing fracture is treated with a chemical diverter. The chemical diverter is exposed to conditions causing it to expand, plugging the fracture. A new fracture can be created through the application of pressure and fluid, without disrupting the plugged fracture. The chemical diverter can then be removed through biodegradation or the application of a solvent to reopen the first fracture.

The low temperature cracking and high temperature rutting of polymer-modified asphalt concrete pavement can be reduced. The composite includes asphalt and at least one polymer that expands at low temperature, triggered by cooling-induced tensile stress, to reduce thermal cracking. The SMP(s) can be incorporated into the asphalt, or a portion of fine aggregates can be replaced with SMP particles or SMP fibers, or aggregate replacement and asphalt modification can be combined.

A sealant composition and method for its manufacture are disclosed. A two-way shape memory polymer (2W-SMP) sealant expands upon cooling and contracts upon heating, and thus provides improved sealing for pavements and other structures. The base resin for the sealant is polybutadiene with a high cis content. Uses for the sealant include, but are not limited to: sealant for expansion joint, contraction joint, or construction joint in cement concrete pavement; sealant or sealer for transverse cracks or block cracks in cement concrete pavement or asphalt concrete pavement; sealant for pipelines, lightweight composite structures, roofs, buildings, bridge decks, dams, offshore platforms; sealant for other structures and devices that have previously typically used polymer sealants.
