A vehicle includes an engine, an accelerator pedal, and a controller. The controller is programmed to command torque to the engine based on a set speed of adaptive cruise control and is programmed to, in response to the adaptive cruise control being active, a measured lateral acceleration of the vehicle exceeding a user-defined lateral acceleration threshold during a road curve, and the accelerator pedal being released, reduce a speed of the vehicle below the set speed until the measured lateral acceleration is less than the lateral acceleration threshold.

Adaptive cruise control with user-defined lateral acceleration threshold

A vehicle includes an engine, a primary axle drivably connected to the engine, and a secondary axle drivably connected to the engine by a clutch. A controller is programmed to, in response to map data indicating that the vehicle is off-road, enable an off-road transfer torque control mode in which temperatures of the clutch are compared to a lower threshold. The controller is further programmed to, in response to the temperature of the clutch exceeding the lower threshold, display a message to a driver indicative of rising temperatures of the clutch, and, in response to a temperature of the clutch exceeding an upper limit, enable a power limiting mode in which torque of the engine is limited to a predefined value.

Off-road clutch control

An electrified vehicle torque transfer system includes, among other things, an engine having an engine shaft, an electric machine having an electric machine shaft, a first clutch that is selectively engaged to rotatably couple together the engine shaft and the electric machine shaft such that the engine can drive rotation of the electric machine, and a second clutch that is selectively engaged to rotatably couple together the engine shaft and the electric machine shaft such that the electric machine can drive rotation of the engine.

Electrified vehicle torque transfer system and method

A vehicle includes a transmission, friction brakes, and a controller. The transmission has a clutch that is configured to transfer torque from an input of the transmission to a drive wheel. The controller is programmed to, in response to application of the friction brakes resulting in a stationary position of the vehicle, disengage the clutch to establish a neutral condition of the transmission. The controller is also programmed to, in response to a command to launch the vehicle while the transmission is in the neutral condition, engage the clutch. The controller is further programmed to, in response to an estimated wheel torque exceeding a rollback threshold during the clutch engagement, release the friction brakes. The wheel torque is based on an estimated clutch torque which is based on a clutch pressure and a transmission input torque.

Vehicle and vehicle launch method

To reduce fuel consumption, a transmission is shifted into a neutral state, called neutral idle, when a vehicle stops in a drive mode. During a transition from a neutral idle state to an engaged state, the engine torque is controlled to avoid excessive shift energy and to mitigate acceleration drop. Specifically, the engine torque is set to a level equal to a sum of a transmission torque capacity and an offset, which is a function of accelerator pedal position. The transmission torque capacity is calculated based on the engaging shift element torque capacity and torque ratios associated with the kinematics and the torque converter. To accommodate noise factors such as variation over time, the offset function is adapted in response to measured clutch energy and acceleration drop.

Method of controlling a powertrain

A vehicle includes an engine and driven wheels each having an associated friction brake. A brake pedal is operable to engage the friction brakes. The vehicle includes a transmission having an input shaft driveably connected to the engine, an output element driveably connected to the driven wheels, and a gear mechanism adapted to establish at least one torque flow path between the input shaft and the output element. The transmission further includes a shift element that interrupts the torque flow path when disengaged. A gear selector is disposed in the passenger cabin and includes at least one forward-drive position, a reverse position, and a neutral position. At least one vehicle controller is configured to, in response to the gear selector being in the forward-drive position, a speed of the vehicle being zero, the vehicle being within a first predefined distance of a stoplight, and the brake pedal being depressed, disengage the shift element to put the transmission in neutral idle.

Control system and method for neutral idle operation

A transmission controller implements a neutral idle feature to reduce fuel consumption. A brake controller implements a Hill Start Assist feature to prevent roll-back when a vehicle is launching on an uphill grade. The transmission controller and the brake controller communicate to implement these features in a synergistic manner. Within certain road grade ranges, the transmission requests Hill Start Assist before activating neutral idle and does not activate neutral idle until it receives confirmation that Hill Start Assist is active. The transmission controller provides a powertrain torque estimate to the brake controller which the brake controller uses to determine when to release the brakes during an assisted start.

Vehicle idle and launch control

A method of controlling a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) simulates a step-ratio transmission upshift. To simulate a step-ratio torque phase, the input torque is gradually reduced before beginning to change the variator ratio. Then, as the variator ratio is changed, the input torque is gradually increased to compensate for the decreasing torque ratio, simulating the relatively constant output torque of an inertia phase of a step-ratio upshift.

Method of shifting a transmission

A vehicle includes a transmission and a controller. The controller is configured to receive a torque request, calculate a Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC) for satisfying the torque request in an initial gear and in an alternate gear, and command the transmission to shift from the initial gear into the alternate gear in response to the calculated SFC for satisfying the torque request in the alternate gear being less than the calculated SFC for satisfying the torque request in the initial gear.

Transmission shift schedule optimization based on calculated specific fuel consumption

A method for testing a vapor purge system (VPS) for an internal combustion engine, and a hybrid vehicle having the VPS include a controller for closing a first valve coupled between a carbon canister of the VPS and the ambient environment, motoring the engine to pull a vacuum on the VPS, closing a second valve coupled between the carbon canister and the engine, and monitoring pressure in the VPS. The VPS has a carbon canister coupled to the engine via a first valve and coupled to atmosphere via a second valve, and a pressure transducer.

Vapor purge system integrity diagnosis for a hybrid vehicle

A method for testing a vapor purge system (VPS), and the vehicle having the VPS, including a controller for measuring a VPS pressure, closing a first valve coupling a VPS carbon canister and the environment, decreasing VPS pressure if it is greater than a threshold, and monitoring VPS pressure for a time period when the engine is at rest and the vehicle is operating. The pressure is decreased by opening a second valve coupling the fuel tank and the engine while the engine is running, and closing the second valve when the pressure is below the threshold. Another method for testing a VPS includes closing a first valve, closing a second valve, measuring the VPS pressure to provide a reference pressure with an associated profile, and monitoring VPS pressure compared to the profile for a time period.
