Systems and related methods for simultaneous high precision synchronization and syntonization of multiple sensors or clocks utilize a precision estimator that receives clock signals and time mark signals from both sensors (a reference sensor and a clock to be measured against the reference sensor). A precision time and frequency estimator determines a time offset, frequency offset, and phase offset of the measured sensor relative to the reference sensor. Associated systems can additionally determine the propagation delay between two remote subsystems connected by a communications channel. The communications channel may be a bidirectional duplexed or multiplexed channel allowing for mutual exchange of timing information along a single non-dedicated cable between sensors. Sensors may be synchronized to within 10 ps of each other without the need for THz clocks or fiber-optic cabling.

Picosecond clock synchronization technique for communication and navigation platform equipment

A display system and method uses a display element. The display element can provide linearly polarized light. A wave retarder film can be configured to adjust the phase of the linearly polarized light so that reflections of the linearly polarized light from a surface in the environment of the display are reduced. A first light control layer is configured to constrain the field of view of the display in at least a first direction.

Display assembly configured for reduced reflection

A fiber bundle head up display includes a bundle of optical fibers. An image source projects a display image onto the fiber bundle. The fiber bundle transfers the display image from its input surface to its output surface and projects the display image onto a combiner, which superimposes the display image in the visual field of a viewer. The fiber bundle transforms the display image while performing three-dimensional relocation of picture elements of the display image to reduce aberration and distortion of the display image. The fiber bundle may be utilized for pre-transforming the display image to reduce or eliminate a variety of image aberration types.

The present invention provides an optical display system and method for producing images and presenting the images for observation in combination with an observer's visual exterior view of an outside scene. The optical display system may include an image source for projecting an image, and a curved beam combination mirror (CBCM) or beam combination mirror (BCM) for reflecting the projected image toward an observer for observation. The image source may be a transmissive LCD, a reflective LCD, a digital micromirror device, a laser display, or the like. The CBCM or BCM may be positioned so that the observer, in a line of sight, may see a visual exterior view of an outside scene through the CBCM or BCM and the projected image in the CBCM or BCM.

Compact head up display with wide viewing angle

A head up display system for a vehicle includes an image source and an optical combiner which reflects the projected image from the image source toward an observer for observation. The optical combiner is positioned so that the observer, in a line of sight, sees both a visual exterior view of an outside scene through the combiner and the projected image in the combiner. In disclosed embodiments, the optical combiner comprises wedge lenses.

An illumination system for use in illuminating a spatial light modulator for a head up display system. The illumination system includes a high power light emitting diode (LED) array assembly; and, a Fresnel lens array operatively associated with the LED array assembly for receiving light produced by the LED and providing a nearly collimated light output for use by the spatial light modulator. Utilization of the ultra bright LED array and Fresnel lens array provides the capability of the illumination source to be made very thin, light weight, and efficient. The Fresnel lens array, which converges the light to be nearly collimated, enhances the harvest of the available flux thus increasing the system efficiency and providing a system that gives the illusion of having an image at infinity. Additional components such as holographic elements, optical compensation films, and brightness enhancement films can be used to tailor the light if required.

Illumination system for a head up display

A meniscus combiner for a head up display (HUD) system. The meniscus combiner includes a meniscus lens; a multi-layer dichroic coating formed on a first surface of the meniscus lens; and, an anti-reflection coating formed on a second, opposite surface of the meniscus lens. The meniscus combiner preferably utilizes a non-symmetric aspheric meniscus lens which simplifies the optical system of the image source (overhead or in-dash unit) minimizing aberrations and minimizing costs. The meniscus combiner may be fabricated utilizing a number of lens sections which may be bonded together and blended. Use of multiple lens sections provides the ability to easily optimize the lens design. Alternatively, the meniscus combiner can be fabricated from a single lens.

Meniscus head up display combiner

A head up display system for a vehicle that includes a compact image source for projecting an image. The compact image source may be foldable up toward or into a cockpit ceiling of the vehicle, be positioned within a dashboard of the vehicle, or located at another suitable position. A combiner reflects the projected image with optical power toward an observer for observation. The combiner is positioned so that the observer, in a line of sight, may see a visual exterior view of an outside scene through the combiner and the projected image in the combiner. In a preferred embodiment, the image source includes an illumination system that includes a high power light emitting diode (LED) array assembly. A Fresnel lens array is operatively associated with the LED array assembly for receiving light produced by the LED and providing a nearly collimated light output. A spatial light modulator receives the nearly collimated light output. The preferred combiner is a meniscus combiner that includes a meniscus lens; a multi-layer dichroic coating formed on a first surface of the meniscus lens; and, an anti-reflection coating formed on a second, opposite surface of the meniscus lens. The meniscus combiner preferably utilizes a non-symmetric aspheric meniscus lens.

Advanced compact head up display

A passive sensing system for determining a physical position of a mechanical device includes an encoding system configured to convert a position signal representative of the physical position of the mechanical device into an encoded signal in a binary format. The sensing system also comprises a plurality of secondary optical paths coupled to a primary optical path positioned between a light source and the encoding system. The encoded signal comprises a plurality of pulses of light each sequentially delayed by the secondary optical paths. A system for determining a physical position of a flight control surface of an aircraft is also disclosed. A method for determining a physical position of a flight control surface of an aircraft is also disclosed. A passive sensing system for determining a physical position of a flight control surface of an aircraft is also disclosed.

Position sensing system

An optical coupler is designed to be utilized with multiple light sources. The optical coupler can include a reflecting mirror, a plurality of coupling rods, and an integrating rod. The reflecting mirror receives light from the light sources and reflects light to the coupling rods. The coupling rods provide a path for the light to the integrating rod.

Multiple lamp coupler

A light engine for an LCD projector is disclosed. More particularly, a liquid crystal display projector including a light source emitting a light beam, a light engine, and a projection lens is disclosed. The light engine includes a polarizing beam splitter for receiving the light beam from the light source. The polarizing beam splitter orthogonally reflects a light beam containing multiple colors and passes a first light beam containing a single color. The light engine also includes a dichroic prism that receives the light beam containing multiple colors, reflects a second light beam containing a single color, and passes a third light beam containing a single color. Further, the light engine includes reflective liquid crystal displays associated with each of the first, second, and third light beams containing a single color for receiving, modulating, and reflecting modulated first, second, and third light beams containing a single color for recombination and projection through the projection lens.

A projection display has a display screen for displaying images formed by image engines illuminated by a high-reliability illumination source. The illumination source contains lamps for illumination of the image engines. Optical components conduct the light from the lamps to the image engines such that when a lamp fails illumination is maintained on the display screen by varying the power to the remaining lamps. A lamp power controller senses failure of a lamp and varies the power to the remaining lamps to compensate for the lamp failure.
