A computing system for controlling a plurality of exterior lights on a flying vehicle is disclosed. The computing system is configured to: determine a flying vehicle status for the flying vehicle; determine an environment status for the flying vehicle; determine a current flight phase for the flying vehicle; determine, for each of a plurality of the exterior lights that is in an automatic lighting control mode, a desired lighting state for the exterior light by applying a predefined lighting pattern that identifies, based on the flying vehicle status, environmental status, and the current flight phase, a first subset of the exterior lights to cause to enter a first lighting state and a second subset of the exterior lights to cause to enter a second lighting state; and cause the first subset of exterior lights to be in the first lighting state and the second subset of exterior lights to be in the second lighting state.

In one example, a method for generating air traffic alerts includes determining a predicted trajectory for a target air-craft, based at least in part on a comparison of information received on a recent trajectory of the target aircraft with a set of procedural trajectory information. The method further includes determining whether a violation of protected airspace is predicted between the target aircraft and an ownship, based at least in part on the predicted trajectory for the target aircraft and a predicted trajectory for the ownship. The method further includes generating an alert output in response to determining that the violation of protected airspace is predicted.

An exemplary method for generating a display includes the steps of determining a position of the aircraft in a vicinity of an approaching runway, retrieving terrain data regarding the vicinity of the approaching runway and retrieving runway data regarding the approaching runway, determining the existence of a runway illusion effect by analyzing the terrain data and the runway data. The method further includes the steps of rendering graphical terrain imagery and rendering graphical runway imagery on the flight display in accordance with the terrain data and the runway data and rendering a graphical runway illusion alleviation object on the flight display.
