An m&#xd7;n pixel cell may be obtained from an input image, each of the pixels having a respective color value. A characterization of the cell may be determined, including determining a lowest color value and a highest color value of the pixels cell. A difference between the highest color value and the lowest color value may be calculated. If the difference is less than or equal to a threshold difference, an output color value inclusively between the highest color value and the lowest color value may be selected, and a first representation of the output color value may be written to an output medium. If the difference is greater than the threshold difference, multiple output color values may be selected, and a second representation of the multiple output color values may be written to the output medium.

Cell-based compression of digital images

Preferably, test-patterns print on separate, multiple print-medium cards, each including a ramp with colors graded along a certain direction&#x2014;and, superimposed on the ramp, a candidate add-on colorant. Ramps preferably are printed in so-called 'customer colors', common in snapshots and particularly snapshot regions that include sky. Positions or amounts of the candidate add-on colorant canvass a likely range of values that optimize camouflaging or suppression of a banding artifact (due to seams in the pagewide array) that is extended along the same certain direction. For each seam and each 'customer color' used, an operator holds up several cards for comparison, selecting the best one to three. Operators thus can evaluate candidate colorant patterns in context of many different tones of the sky and other customer colors. Preferably banding suppression is integrated with linearization: at each seam a series of linearization tables is smoothly interpolated between measurement-based tables for adjacent inkjet dice.

A graphic piece can be used to add a border to an image. The graphic piece is created by creating a graphic image foreground image and a graphic image background image. The foreground and background images are merged into a graphic image file, the contents of which specify pixel colors and pixel color weights of a graphic piece capable of being added to an image.

An indication of any target point internal to a first color space is received. The target point is rendered in a second color space using one of at least two levels of gray colorant and at most two primary colorants out of three primary colorants in the second color space.

A mask file identifies pixels of a graphic piece to merge with pixels of the image. The pixels of the graphic piece are merged or combined with pixels of the image according to the mask so that the image is rendered with a border.

High speed optical modulators can be made of a lateral PN diode formed in a silicon optical rib waveguide, disposed on a SOI or other silicon based substrate. A PN junction is formed at the boundary of the P and N doped regions. The depletion region at the PN junction overlaps with the center of a guided optical mode propagating through the waveguide. Electrically modulating a lateral PN diode causes a phase shift in an optical wave propagating through the waveguide. Each of the doped regions can have a stepped or gradient doping profile within it or several doped sections with different doping concentrations. Forming the doped regions of a PN diode modulator with stepped or gradient doping profiles can optimize the trade off between the series resistance of the PN diode and the optical loss in the center of the waveguide due to the presence of dopants.

Electrically modulating a lateral PN diode causes a phase shift in an optical wave propagating through the waveguide. Due to differences in fabrication methods, forming strip loaded waveguides with consistent properties for use in PN diode optical modulators is much easier than fabricating similar rib waveguides.

High speed optical modulators can be made of a reverse biased lateral PN diode formed in a silicon rib optical waveguide disposed on a SOI or other silicon based substrate. A PN junction is formed at the boundary of the P and N doped regions. The depletion region at the PN junction overlaps with the center of a guided optical mode propagating through the waveguide. Electrically modulating a reverse biased lateral PN diode causes a phase shift in an optical wave propagating through the waveguide. Prior art forward biased PN and PIN diode modulators have been relatively low speed devices.

A method and system for enhancing images utilizes the direction of a detected edge within an image block of an input image to selectively smooth or sharpen a pixel of the input image that corresponds to that image block. The direction of a detected edge within the image block is determined by computing the horizontal gradient and the vertical gradient, and then using the ratio of the computed gradients. In an exemplary embodiment, the method and system is designed to exclusively use bit shifting to perform multiplications, rather than using digital signal processing. Consequently, the method and system is suitable for implementation in printer firmware and/or hardware.

High speed optical modulators can be made of k modulators connected in series disposed on one of a variety of semiconductor substrates. An electrical signal propagating in a microwave transmission line is tapped off of the transmission line at regular intervals and is amplified by k distributed amplifiers. Each of the outputs of the k distributed amplifiers is connected to a respective one of the k modulators. Distributed amplifier modulators can have much higher modulating speeds than a comparable lumped element modulator, due to the lower capacitance of each of the k modulators. Distributed amplifier modulators can have much higher modulating speeds than a comparable traveling wave modulator, due to the impedance matching provided by the distributed amplifiers.

Distributed amplifier optical modulators

A method of processing a color digital image file provides a 'metallic,' or a 'sepia,' or an &#x201c;antiqued&#x201d; image file. The resulting image files may be viewed, for example, on a computer monitor, or may be printed out in hard copy form using a black-and-white or color printer. A color photocopy machine which has a digital image output may be used to produce the original image file, and such a color photocopier (if it will accept digital image files), may also be used to produce the output hard copy printouts of processed image files. Thus, such a digital photocopier may be configured internally to also process image files, and may be employed to selectively process images copied on the machine into the user's choice of a metallic, a sepia, or an antiqued image on the output hardcopy of the color photocopier.
