A variable displacement swash plate type compressor which incorporates a lubricant pump coupled to one end of the drive shaft of the compressor, wherein the lubricant pump provides positive lubricant flow within the compressor and facilitates the lubrication of compressor components.

An oil separator comprising a cylindrical portion, an inlet for incoming gas/oil mixture, an outlet for separated gas, a lower portion, and an outlet for separated oil is provided. The lower portion decreases in diameter as it proceeds from top to bottom, thereby providing for an increase in centrifugal force within the oil separator and greater separation of oil. The inlet traverses an upper wall of the oil separator, and preferably comprises a plurality of passageways angled with respect to the upper wall.

Oil separator

The present invention relates to an oil separator for separating oil from a gaseous medium discharged by a compressor. The oil separator includes an inlet for communication with the discharge outlet of a compressor, and first and second outlets. The first outlet allows separated refrigerant to escape the oil separator, and the second outlet allows separated oil to escape the oil separator. A tortuous path lies between the inlet and a first outlet, and is comprised of one or more enlarged regions and one or more narrow regions that are angularly situated with each other. The walls of the tortuous path provide surfaces on which the oil contained within the gaseous medium can be impinged, and thereby separated from the gaseous medium. The oil separator may also include a collection chamber and drainage pathways that communicate with the tortuous path. The oil separator can be a separate body that is attached to a compressor, or may be integrally formed by a housing of a compressor.

A variable displacement swash plate type compressor which incorporates a lubrication passage formed in a cylinder block and crankcase, and a spray nozzle disposed at the crankcase end of the lubrication passage. The lubrication passage provides fluid communication between an oil sump and the spray nozzle, and the spray nozzle causes lubricating oil to be efficiently distributed as a fine mist or spray to the crank chamber. The lubrication passage and spray nozzle maximize the flow of refrigerant gas and lubricating oil to the crank chamber under all operating conditions providing cooling and lubrication to the internal moving components within the crankcase.

The present invention relates to a piston for use in a swashplate type compressor. The piston includes a void in the exterior surface of the head region that is positioned at a distance from a region that receives a side load during operation of the compressor. In preferred embodiments, the void comprises a helical groove that extends along a path parallel to the region receiving the side load, and a recess or depression positioned adjacent the region receiving the side load.

A variable displacement swash plate type compressor which incorporates an impeller attached to a drive shaft, and a plurality of blades for, efficiently directing lubricating oil to a shaft seal. The impeller provides a mist of lubricating oil to the crankcase, and the blades direct lubricating oil to a shaft seal. The impeller and blades maximize the distribution and flow of lubricating oil to the crank chamber under all operating conditions providing cooling and lubrication to the internal moving components within the crankcase.

A multiple stage rotary compressor having a housing with a pump cavity and an orbiting ring piston in the cavity. A cylindrical post carried by the housing within the orbiting ring. A pair of vanes engaging the outer surface of the orbiting ring to define first-stage having a pair of primary pumping chambers in the cavity. A second pair of internal vanes contacting the inner surface of the orbiting ring to define a second-stage having a pair of secondary pumping chambers. A capacity control mechanism applied to the first-stage operative to limit the compressor capacity to the second-stage only. A second capacity control mechanism applied to the second-stage operative to variably bypass second-stage discharge to second-stage suction. The plurality of capacity controllers operating to establish varying compressor pump capacity depending upon the operating requirements of the compressor.

A variable capacity rotary compressor (12) having a housing (14) with a cylindrical chamber (16) and an orbiting ring piston (26) in the chamber. A pair of outer vanes (20) slidably mount in the housing and are biased into engagement with the orbiting ring (26), forming a pair of gas chambers (27). A pair of vane deactivation assemblies (52) each include a deactivation pin (58) which engages a deactivation recess (60) in its respective outer vane (20) when a corresponding one or both solenoid actuators (54) are energized. The pins (58) hold the outer vanes (20) in a retracted position out of contact with the orbiting ring (26), thus reducing the capacity of the compressor (12). Each outer vane (20) includes a slotted recess (62) adjacent to its deactivation recess (60) in order to allow for plastic yielding of the vane (20) behind the deactivation recess (60) without the yielded material interfering with the sliding motion of the outer vanes (20) relative to the walls of corresponding vane slots (18).

A rotary compressor having a housing with a pump cavity, an orbiting ring piston in the cavity, a cylindrical post carried by the housing within the orbiting ring, at least one pair of vanes engaging the orbiting ring to define pumping chambers in the cavity, a pair of primary fluid inlet passages communicating with the working pressure chamber during expansion of the pressure chamber, a pair of fluid outlet ports communicating with the working chambers as the volume of the working chambers contracts upon rotation of the orbiting ring piston, and a pair of secondary fluid inlet ports in parallel disposition with respect to the primary ports formed in a valve plate adjacent the orbiting ring piston whereby the orbiting ring piston registers with the ports and opens and closes the ports in synchronism with the opening end and closing of the main ports whereby the effective inlet flow capacity for the fluid into the expanding working chamber is increased.

A clutch apparatus for a rotary compressor for an air conditioning system is disclosed including a crankshaft, an eccentric for engaging an orbiting ring within the compressor, and a plunger disposed within the crankshaft. The apparatus further includes a device for axially reciprocating the plunger in the crankshaft so as to cause engagement and disengagement of the plunger into the eccentric whereby the crankshaft transmits torque to the eccentric to rotate the orbiting ring within the compressor.

A gas compressor includes a housing defining a compression chamber, a crankshaft having an eccentric surface radially offset from the axis of rotation of the crankshaft, an orbiting ring rotatably mounted on the eccentric for rotation about an axis offset from the shaft axis, a cylindrical post coaxial with the axis of the housing passages for carrying gas to and from the compression chamber, vanes movable radially with respect to the orbiting ring, and pressure sensitive valves that open exhaust passages from the compression chamber. The orbiting ring rotates in continual contact with the inner surface of the housing and the outer surface of the cylindrical post. Compression occurs within a first stage space and a second stage space, each space divided into compression chambers by the sliding vanes and contact between the ring and post or between the ring and housing. An intermediate pressure chamber is located in one end of the housing and this chamber can be configured to allow for intercooling of the refrigerant. It is also possible to provide gas separation of the discharge gas and return the separated gas to the intermediate chamber for improved efficiency of the compressor.
