This invention relates to a process for dyeing asphalt and/or bitumen with inorganic granulated pigments, which is characterized in that inorganic pigments, to which have been added oils which possess a kinematic viscosity at 40.degree. C. (DIN 51 561) of 1.6 to 1,500 mm.sup.2 /s, and/or waxes, polyols, polyethers and paraffins with dropping points (DIN 51 801, ASTM D 566) of between 50.degree. and 180.degree. C. as binding agents, are granulated and mixed with the asphalt and/or bitumen.

Chrome green oxide useful, inter alia, as a coloring material and having a water number of 10 to 40 g/100 g is prepared by adding sulphonic acid compounds, polyphosphoric acid compounds, polyacrylic acid compounds or mixtures thereof, in quantities of from 0.1 to 2% by weight, to an aqueous suspension of chrome oxide green pigment having a BET surface area of from 1 to 20 m.sup.2 /g before drying, and then drying the suspension.

In an aqueous fluid dispersible filler or pigment suspension containing a dispersion aid, the improvement which comprises employing as the dispersion aid about 0.01 to 1% by weight, based on solids, of a phosphonocarboxylic acid or a salt thereof. The pigment may be TiO.sub.2 and be present in from 30 to 80% concentration. The dispersion aid may be phosphonobutane-1, 2,4-tricarboxylic acid or a salt, and an amine or alkanolamine may also be present.
