An electrochemical storage cell is bounded by a metallic casing and has a cup-shaped solid electrolyte on the inside which separates an anode compartment from a cathode compartment. The storage cell is externally closed in a leak-proof and gas-tight manner. A closure of the cell has an additional seal with two mutually overlapping components between which an insulating ring is disposed.

A method for the handling of alkali metals includes using a protective gas which behaves inertly with regard to the alkali metal within a defined temperature range, and which reacts with the alkali metal to form solid reaction products outside this temperature range.

A process for joining components having ceramic and metallic joining surfaces provides a permanent and complete joint with ceramic surfaces despite metal-oxide layers on the metal or metal-alloy joining surfaces. A glass coating is applied to the ceramic joining surface before joining. The glass contains at least 5 to 20% by weight of Na.sub.2 O, 30 to 60% by weight of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and 20 to 60% by weight of SiO.sub.2. The surfaces of the components to be joined are then permanently joined to each other at a specified temperature and a specified pressure.

Process for joining metallic and ceramic materials

An electrochemical storage cell based on sodium and sulphur includes a metallic housing. A solid electrolyte disposed in the housing defines an anode space and a cathode space mutually separated by the solid electrolyte and outwardly bounded by the housing. A felt is disposed in the cathode space to form an electrode. The felt is impregnated with sulphur and folded at least twice. The felt has graphite or carbon fibers disposed substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the storage cell and substantially perpendicular to the surface of the solid electrolyte.

An electrochemical storage cell based on sodium and sulfur having an anode space and a cathode space, which are separated from one another by a solid electrolyte and are defined at least in some areas by a metal housing wherein the cathode space, in order to form the electrode, is filled with filamentary material of graphite or carbon that is saturated with sulfur. Between the solid electrolyte and the electrode of the cathode space, at least one intermediate film is provided, by means of which a sliding of the electrode along the surface of the solid electrolyte is assured.

An electrochemical storage cell based on alkali metal and chalcogen with an anode space and a cathode space separated from each other by an alkali ion-conducting solid electrolyte. The cell is bounded by a metallic housing. A closure seals the top of the cell in a sealing zone. The open end of the can shaped solid electrolyte disposed in the interior of the cell is bonded by a bonding material to a ring-shaped insulating part which defines the two reactant space relative to each other in the sealing zone. In the sealing zone of the storage cell closure, the metallic housing as well as the solid electrolyte and the insulating part fastened to it are covered by a protective layer.
