A process for the production of a multi-layer composite comprising applying a coating layer from a pigmented coating composition A onto the back face of a transparent plastic film and then applying an NIR-opaque coating layer from a pigmented coating composition B, wherein the pigment content of coating composition A consists 50 to 100 wt. % of black pigment with low NIR absorption and 0 to 50 wt. % of further pigment, which is selected in such a way that coating layer A' exhibits low NIR absorption and that the multi-layer composite exhibits a brightness L* of at most 10 units, wherein the pigment content of coating composition B is either a pigment content PCconsisting 90 to 100 wt. % of aluminum flake pigment and 0 to 10 wt. % of further pigment, which is selected in such a way that NIR-opaque coating layer B&#x2032; exhibits low NIR absorption, or a pigment content PCcomprising &#x3c;90 wt. % of aluminum flake pigments and being composed in such a way that NIR-opaque coating layer B&#x2032; exhibits low NIR absorption, and wherein coating layers A&#x2032; and B&#x2032; are cured.

A process for the production of a dark-color multi-layer coating, comprising the successive steps: (1) applying an NIR-opaque coating layer A' from a solventborne coating composition A to a substrate, (2) applying a coating layer B&#x2032; from a solventborne coating composition B onto the substrate provided with coating layer A&#x2032;, (3) subjecting the coated substrate obtained in step (2) to a drying step, (4) applying a clear coat layer, and (5) curing the coating layers simultaneously; wherein both coating compositions A and B comprise binders and crosslinkers comprising melamine-formaldehyde resin crosslinker, wherein both coating compositions A and B comprise certain proportions of cellulose ester binder and NAD binder and/or sheet silicate and/or fumed silica and/or urea SCA and/or polyolefine wax, wherein the pigment content of coating composition A comprises &#x3c;90 wt. % of aluminum flake pigments and is composed in such a way that NIR-opaque coating layer A&#x2032; exhibits low NIR absorption, wherein the pigment content of coating composition B consists 50 to 100 wt. % of black pigment with low NIR absorption and 0 to 50 wt. % of further pigment.

A process for the production of a dark-color multi-layer coating, comprising the successive steps: (1) applying an NIR-opaque coating layer A' from a waterborne pigmented coating composition A to a substrate, (2) applying a coating layer B&#x2032; from a waterborne pigmented coating composition B onto the substrate provided with coating layer A&#x2032;, (3) subjecting the coated substrate obtained in step (2) to a drying step, (4) applying a clear coat layer, and (5) curing the coating layers simultaneously; wherein both coating compositions A and B comprise aqueous microgel and sheet silicate, wherein the pigment content of coating composition A consists 90 to 100 wt. % of aluminum flake pigment and 0 to 10 wt. % of further pigment, wherein the pigment content of coating composition B consists 50 to 100 wt. % of black pigment with low NIR absorption and 0 to 50 wt. % of further pigment.

A process for the production of special effect multi-layer coatings, comprising the successive steps: (1) applying a 10 to 30 &#x3bc;m thick base coat layer onto a substrate provided with an EDC primer, (2) applying a clear coat layer onto the base coat layer, (3) jointly curing the base coat and clear coat layers, wherein the base coat layer is applied in a first layer and in a second layer; the first layer comprises a modified water-borne base coat produced by mixing an unmodified water-borne base coat with an admixture component and the second layer comprises the unmodified water-borne base coat, wherein the unmodified water-borne base coat has a ratio by weight of pigment content to resin solids content of 0.05:1 to 0.6:1 and wherein the pigment content of the unmodified water-borne base coat comprises at least one metal flake pigment having a thickness of 10 to 100 nm corresponding to a proportion of 0.1 to 5 wt. %, relative to the resin solids content of the unmodified water-borne base coat and at least one additional special effect pigment and wherein the composition of the pigment content is such that the UV light transmission through the base coat layer formed of the first and second layers is less than 0.1% in the wavelength range of from 290 to 380 nm and less than 0.5% in the wavelength range of from 380 to 400 nm.
