A color photographic recording material having a support, at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer containing a pyrazoloazole magenta coupler, at least one other layer which is arranged closer to the source of light and at least one other layer arranged further away from the source of light than the silver halide emulsion layer containing the pyrazoloazole magenta coupler, these other layers containing gelatine and a randomly or alternatingly structured copolymer of vinyl alcohol and an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a graft polymer of vinyl acetate on polyalkylene oxide followed by saponification of the acetate groups is distinguished by improved stability to light of the magenta dye obtained after processing.

Improved color graininess can be obtained with a color photographic recording material containing in association with a silver halide emulsion layer unit a non-diffusing colored color coupler which, in the coupling position, contains a diffusion-proofing primary ballast group which is attached through an azo group and which is releasable during the color coupling reaction and which coupler gives a hydrophobic dye of limited mobility in the color coupling reaction.

In combination with oil formers of the alkylphenol type, 3-anilinopyrazolones show absorption maxima displaced by about 8 to 12 nm towards longer wavelengths and a blue secondary absorption further displaced towards the UV range and, hence, a reduced yellow secondary density.

5-pyrazolone compounds which are substituted with a thioether group in the 4-position may be prepared by the reaction of a 5-pyrazolone compound which is unsubstituted in the 4-position with a sulphenic acid amide. The resulting 5-pyrazolone compounds substituted in the 4-position are suitable for use as 2-equivalent magenta couplers in color photographic recording materials.

Process for the preparation of thioether compounds

High interimage effects and edge effects can be obtained in multilayer color photographic recording materials if yellow DIR couplers of formula I are used therein, particularly if used in green sensitized or red sensitized layers. A photographic recording material containing at least one pyrazolone in at least one non-photosensitive layer I, a compound Sc, which reacts with the oxidation product of a p-phenylene diamine developer to form substantially colorless products and which is contained in a non-photosensitive layer which is not separated from the layer I by a photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer, shows improved protection against formaldehyde.
