To permit greater through-put of a mold box filling and compacting system, mold boxes are moved vertically by a lifting table which passes through the station transport turret (10) to place a pattern or mold carrier plate (11, 12) in the mold box, and, upon continued vertical movement, placing a filling frame (14) about the mold box, and, upon further vertical movement, placing the thus formed subassembly in engagement with a sand filling apparatus (15). Upon subsequent lowering, the subassembly is returned to the turret, the turret rotates and places the subassembly in position for alignment with a compacting station, raises the subassembly to the compacting station for compaction of the sand about the model or pattern. The subassembly is then lowered; after lowering for a short distance, the fill pattern transport, for example another turret or pivotable arm system, is placed in interfering position with the filling frame so that it is stripped off the mold box which is then lowered on a removal conveyor, for removal from the compacting station; continued downward movement at the compacting station table then places the now freed pattern or model carrier plate again on the station transport turret for return to the first position. Sand filling and compaction can be carried out simultaneously on sequentially arriving mold boxes under control of a control system (C) which controls appropriate sequencing.

Foundry mold forming production method and system

An apparatus for the compaction of foundry mold making material using gas under pressure, comprises a pressure vessel for the such gas, a mold flask, a filling frame, a pattern plate and a pattern thereon onto which the material is to be loosely heaped. The flask, frame and plate form a mold chamber under the pressure vessel and between them there a valve is placed, the valve having a movable valve member adapted to open up a flow cross section of the valve predominantly under the effect of gas under pressure in the pressure vessel. The valve member is guided within the pressure vessel, with the valve member being adapted to perform an opening motion, which at least mainly directed into the mold chamber.

Apparatus for compressing foundry moulding material by pressure gas

In a process for compacting foundry mold making material, that is loosely heaped in a closed mold space over a pattern, the surface of the material is acted on by a compressed gas with a pressure of at the most 8 bar. This gas is caused to undergo expansion out of an inlet space through a valve in an opening at a gas flow rate of over 50 kg/sec and with a pressure increase rate of over 300 bar/sec, into the mold space. The maximum pressure in the inlet space or antichamber is 20 bar. An apparatus for use in the method is made up of a pressure vessel, a mold flask placed thereunder having a filling frame and a pattern plate. The opening cross section of the valve is 50 to 150% of the horizontal cross section of the mold flask and is opened in a short time of the order of milliseconds.

Apparatus for compacting foundry mold making materials

A molding installation for the production of bipartite-boxless foundry molds, comprises a molding machine with a molding station wherein a cope and a drag are simultaneously shaped and a conveying means by which the cope and the drag are conveyed along in a closed path from the molding station to a joining and stripping station where the cope and drag are recombined and from which they are removed together from the complete foundry mold with the empty molding boxes returned to the molding station while the boxless foundry mold is transferred to a casting line. At least one processing station is provided between the molding station and the joining and stripping station for conducting finishing work, such as the insertion of cores, on at least one of the two molds. The conveying means has linear conveying lanes which are arranges in a superimposed relationship (one above the other) along at least part of their lengths, the molding station and the joining and stripping station being located in the superimposed part of the lanes, an upper of the conveying lanes receives the copes and a lower of the conveying lanes receives the drags and at least the lower conveying lane is extended between the molding station and the joining and stripping station so as to enable inclusion of a number of required processing stations. In one embodiment, the upper lanes and lower lanes are constructed to cause the cope and drag to travel through like rectangular paths, while in other embodiments, the rectangular path through which the drags travel is extended relative to the path through which the copes travel.

Molding installation for the production of bipartite boxless foundry

A method for forming at least one air vent or hole in a casting mold made of molding said and having a top flask with at least one blind hole originating at its parting plane with a bottom flask comprises the steps of pressurizing the mold cavity and drilling the air vent or hole into communication with the blind hole while drawing off the materials produced by drilling directly at the drilling point. An apparatus for performing the above-noted method includes, according to a preferred embodiment, a source of compressed gas having a pressure hood mountable over the inlet of the mold, and a drilling tool disposed within a suction hood which is placed in a sealing engagement with the top flask after the drilling tool has been properly aligned with the blind hole that is to form part of the air vent or hole.

Method and apparatus for providing air vents or holes in casting moles

When an empty molding box arrives at the molding machine on a roller track extending through the machine, it is placed on a pattern plate carrier with a pattern situated thereon and is lowered thereon on to a transverse roller track on which it is transferred, by means of a thrust drive operating on the carrier, to the empty station of a two-station transporting carriage on which it is then moved, by means of another thrust drive operating on the carriage, to one of the two outer working stations of a three-station roller track, namely a preparation track, parallel to the first-mentioned roller track, where the preparation work is done. As the two-station carriage moves thus, an already prepared molding box and carrier on its other station arrives at the central station of the preparation track and is then drawn back to the molding machine. After the molding operation the pattern plate carrier is extracted for re-use with another empty molding box, while the completed molding box is transferred away along the first-mentioned roller track. Coupling means, comprising plates on the first-mentioned thrust drive and the pattern plate carriers, move into and out of engagement as required when the carrier is moved vertically in the molding machine or horizontally on the preparation track.

Method and apparatus for manual preparation work on foundry molding

A foundry molding installation for producing boxless (or flaskless) sand molds comprises a molding machine having a pattern plate (or match plate) for simultaneous molding of upper and lower bodies (or mold halves) and a shifting device for transporting a molded lower body to a transfer station and simultaneously returning to the molding station, for assembly with the upper body therein, a lower body which has been provided with cores. The cores are inserted at core insertion stations along the sides of a rectangular, closed circulation, roller track which is mainly disposed outside the molding machine. At the molding-machine end the track comprises a tandem shifting apparatus having a transfer station in common with that of the shifting device of the molding machine and being movable back and forth, over the shifting device, so as to return a cored lower body from one side of the track to the transfer station while feeding a fresh lower body to the other side of the track. At the other end of the track sides, the circulation of lower bodies is effected by a transfer carriage which runs on rails from one side to the other and incorporates a section of roller track matching that of the sides of the rectangle. The shifting device may be a turntable having recessed seatings for the lower bodies, a lifting apparatus being provided below the turntable for raising the body out of the turntable and into the tandem shifting apparatus.

Foundry molding installation for producing boxless sand molds

The molding machine has injection apparatus which operates with compressed air for filling a molding box with molding sand and pre-compacting the sand. Vents for escape of spent air from the molding box are provided in a filling frame, which rests on the molding box during filling and compaction, and may also be provided on the surface of a pattern plate carrier and in a pressure plate against which the sand is finally consolidated by pressure exerted through said carrier. Exhaust means for the spent air comprise an annular passage on the outside of the filling frame. The pressure plate is formed to define nozzles through which the sand is injected into the molding box. Means are described for supplying sand and compressed air, for conveying a succession of molding boxes and for mounting, lifting and lowering the pattern plate carrier and withdrawing the latter for replacement of the pattern.

Foundry molding machine for box molds

Foundry moulding boxes are automatically clamped together or to a supporting plate by means of loose clamps (as distinct from clamps which are permanently fixed to a moulding box or to an individual carriage supporting the boxes) which are spring loaded and are brought by combined preloading and moving devices into the region of the parts which are to be clamped by allowing the springs to relax and transmit the preload to those parts via abutment members of the clamps which engage therewith. The clamps are carried by respective stirrups which are pivotably attached to a mobile carriage running on rails to convey the clamps from an unclamping station to a clamping station where the clamps are left in clamping engagement with a pair of moulding boxes while the stirrups return with the carriage to remove the clamps from another such pair. The stirrups incorporate drives for preloading the clamps and opening up the gap between the abutment members. Part of the mobile carriage is movable by another drive for engaging the stirrups with the clamps, and disengaging them therefrom, after the stirrups have been swung into position by other drives provided on the carriage to cause pivotal movement of the stirrups.
