To produce novel pattern designs differing from patterns which are available, a sewing machine comprising control segments stored in a pattern carrier and corresponding each to one sewing pattern formed by a group of stitches, a device for sensing the program carrier, and a device for controlling the needle and feed movements determining the pattern, is provided with a second program carrier including control segments for at least a single stitch, with the second program carrier being activatable through a selector switch between two consecutive steps of sensing one or more of the control segments of the first program carrier. In an electronically controlled sewing machine capable of storing in a programmable working storage any number of sewing patterns which can be sequentially recalled, a program carrier comprises at least one control segment which is associated with a single stitch and whose starting address can be stored in the working storage once or several times between addresses of control segments of the sewing patterns. If the additional control segment corresponds to a single backward stitch, a particularly great number of designs completely differing from the basic pattern can be produced.

A sewn pattern arrangement is produced by a zig zag sewing machine in a workpiece, within the range of a modular pattern length and width. Individual elementary patterns are sewn which are formed by several stitches and are preferably of the cross-stitch type and extend each only over a fraction of the modular pattern width. This makes it possible to sew elementary patterns at various locations within the provided range of widths, so that a variety of optically impressive designs may be produced by sewing pattern rows in a desired configuration. The respective final stitch of a pattern element forms the first stitch of the subsequent one, so that jump stitches between elementary patterns are avoided. Large-area patterns may be obtained by grouping rows of pattern elements side by side.

In an electrically controlled sewing machine equipped with means for varying the feed and the needle position for individual stitches and with a program storage for storing consecutive sewing programs, the display is made easily understandable and the display unit remains a compact structure by providing alphanumeric display elements in a sequence and means for switching the display unit into a first state, in which a basic setting of the pattern is indicated in symbols, and into a second state in which the patterns can be indicated in the sequential order of their storage.

A sewing machine includes a housing with an upper arm portion, a standard and a cloth holder arm and a sound player such as a transcriber recorder associated with the sewing machine with a sound producing device for explaining the operation thereof. The device may be associated with the machine itself, for example by being incorporated in the upper arm or it may be included as a portion of a cabinet for the sewing machine.

A method for the formation of an overcast seam by means of a zig-zag sewing machine. After the formation of the first looping of needle and looper thread in a first overstitch position of a needle bar the needle thread is loosened and the needle bar moves into a second overstitch position, in which a further thread looping takes place. After the formation of at least one straight stitch in the second overstitch position, the joining thread between the first two thread looping is drawn out, forming a loop in the first overstitch position, the needle pierces into the loop, after which it is released. The seam thus formed is a firm joining seam by which the sewing material is not gathered between the thread loopings. The method is carried out on a device which comprises an oversewing tongue to which is assigned, in order to obtain two successive motional phases, a starting handle arranged in the swinging path of the needle bar, and a starting handle arranged in the axial path of motion, for the first overstitch position and into whose path of motion protrudes a loop stripper. The needle bar thus controls the drawing out and casting off of the joining thread between the first two thread loopings.

Method and device for forming an overcast seam with a zig-zag sewing

A thread monitoring device for monitoring the thread supply in a sewing machine, having a rotary hook, comprises, a hook body with a thread bobbin having thread thereon which is connected to a rotatable shaft for rotation thereby. The hook includes a stationary bobbin case which is enclosed by a hook body which has a hub portion connected to the shaft. A light source is disposed on one side of the hook and a light receiver is disposed on the opposite side. Light is transmitted by the light source through a path intercepting the thread on the bobbin so that, when the thread on the bobbin is paid out during the stitching operation, beyond a predetermined amount, the light will be transmitted to a reflective wall portion of the hook body and deflected by the wall portion to the light receiver. The light receiver is connected in a control circuit to operate a control for operating the sewing machine or for actuating an indicator to show that the thread has been used up to the predetermined amount.
