A shadow mask for color picture tubes has a cathode-side surface covered with a heat-insulating layer, an electron reflecting and absorbing layer, and a heat-emitting cover layer. Some of the electrons are reflected while others are absorbed in the cover layer and transformed to heat, but the heat does not act directly on the mask and is emitted into the interior of the tube. Local temperature differences which particularly occur with high contrast pictures and cause partial doming of the perforated mask are reduced.

A process and a device for the joining of fastening elements on a mask frame of picture tubes by welding using laser beams is applicable to the production of color picture tubes for television sets and computer monitors. After positioning the fastening elements, the elements are welded by laser beams from at least one laser source. The laser source is located outside the mask frame, and the laser beam is guided through a glass wall of a screen to weld the fastening elements.

Process and an apparatus for joining fastening elements on the mask frame of picture tubes

A shadow mask for a color picture tube a thermal includes insulating layer preventing heat transfer to an apertured shadow mask. The side of the mask directed toward the cathode of the color picture tube is coated with a heat-insulating layer including particles having a porous structure. The pores may contain heavy metals or heavy metal compounds so that electron reflection and absorption occurs directly within the layer. The resulting heat is transferred to the interior of the picture tube instead of to the mask.

Shadow mask having an insulating layer and a process for the production

A process for the production of mask frames for cathode ray tubes and is particularly useful in the production of color picture tubes for TV sets and monitors. The production of the frames is performed by welding at least two starting components, followed by forming, wherein planar starting components are positioned and fixed in positions in such way that edges of the starting components to be welded are in contact, followed by welding the starting components with at least one laser beam and, subsequently, processing the frame by pressing and/or punching. Preferably the laser beam is generated using a CO.sub.2 gas laser or a Nd:YAG solid-state laser. Preferably, the power of the laser beam is modulated to produce a weld that increases in depth from the beginning of the weld and decreases in depth at the end of the weld.
