The SSD multi-card adapters can include an interface section between various solid state drive cards and drive connector types. A distributed storage system node is disclosed. The distributed storage system node may include at least one storage device, which may act as the primary replica for data subject to an Input/Output (I/O) request. A cost analyzer may calculate a local estimated time required to complete the I/O request at the primary replica, and a remote estimated time required to complete the I/O request at a secondary replica of the data. An I/O redirector may direct the I/O request to either the primary replica or the secondary replica based on the local estimated time required and the one remote estimated time required.

Various embodiments for implementing a switched direct attached shared storage architecture as disclosed herein include: providing a plurality of compute nodes, each compute node having integrated compute capabilities, data storage, and a network interface controller (Host NIC), the plurality of compute nodes being in data communication with each other via a local area network, the plurality of compute nodes each including distributed storage processing software resident thereon; providing a plurality of physical data storage devices in data communication with a storage controller; and enabling data communications in a data store switch fabric between the plurality of compute nodes and the plurality of physical data storage devices via the Host NIC and the storage controller, the data store switch fabric encapsulating data requests from the plurality of compute nodes into data frames for transport to corresponding physical data storage devices.

A storage system includes a plurality of solid-state drives (SSDs) in which each SSD is an endpoint of a peer group in which one SSD is a primary SSD of the peer group, or all SSDs are treated as equal peers. Each SSD further includes a host interface port coupled to a host computing device that receives receive input/output (I/O) communications from the host computing device, a peer-interface port coupled to the peer-interface port of each other SSD in the peer group; and a controller coupled to the host interface port and the peer-interface port. The primary SSD controller is responsive to I/O communications received from the host computing device to provide data-protection computations relating to a coordinated data-protection configuration provided by the peer group and to pass the coordinated data-protection configuration information to the controllers of the other end points of the peer group through the peer-interface port.
