A printing mechanism for waterless offset printing, including a form cylinder that carries a sleeve-shaped printing form and/or a transfer cylinder that carries a sleeve-shaped transfer form. The printing form and transfer form can be slipped onto or removed from the respective cylinder. At least one of the form cylinder and the transfer cylinder being provided with an internal channel through which fluid is circulated for internally cooling the cylinder.

A mechanism for securely clamping a priming plate (6) to a form cylinder (1), in which a cylinder groove (2) formed in the form cylinder (1) has rotatably mounted therein a clamping spindle (7), which has a gripper edge (10) which clamps a V-shaped chamfer (11) of the leading flange (5) of the priming plate (6). The trailing flange (9) of the priming plate (6) is grasped and clamped in a positive-locking manner by leaf springs (8) mounted to the clamping spindle (7) which are hook-shaped.

To ensure accurately aligned handling of a plurality of superposed webs (3, 4) forming a composite web, which is to be folded longitudinally twice, particularly to maintain alignment of the individual folded web portions for subsequent application of indices, month, or other date identification and the like, particularly for book and calendar printing, two longitudinally located folding triangle or formers (22, 40) are located, one immediately behind the other, in the path or stream of flow of the webs, in which the first one receives the webs, after lateral alignment and the like, from the printing machine, and the second one is rotated 90.degree. with respect to the incoming web to the first folding former, and applies a second fold. This ensures that the web is always processed in a linear path without twist or lateral offset, thus ensuring alignment of the individual elements of the composite folded web (8). Preferably, the first one, in the flow of the web, of the folding formers (9, 22) is height-adjustable to accommodate different formats of receiving paper and ensuring that the folded edge will always be in a predetermined plane, which will be the plane of arrival of the folded products to the second folding former (11, 40), and provide a reference edge for subsequent handling apparatus, such as perforators or punches (14), a cutter (16) and belt transport systems (17,19).

To accurately place a modular replaceable or changeable deformation tool drawer (200) in position on a frame frame (1), and permit a variety of different operating procedures to be carried out on printed products supplied to the system without requiring substantial adjustment, the operating tools are retained in a box-like deformation tool drawer which can be inserted in the frame, and held in position by a group of clamping elements, such as fluid operated or electromagnetic cylinders and/or pistons, and, in addition, hold-down screws (6) are secured to the frame to hold the drawer in position on the frame and permit fine adjustment thereof with respect to the frame, and hence with respect to a paper web passing therethrough, before securely clamping the drawer by the clamping elements for production operation.

To provide access to sequentially positioned printing machine operating stations (3, 14, 17, 33, 44) without having to tear a paper web threaded through the printing machine, in which the web passes, when in a printing position, essentially horizontally between the operating stations, a pair of vertically spaced substrate guide elements (23, 26; 123, 126; 56) are positioned on a vertical elevator positioning structure (22, 122; 52), the paper being guided between the guide elements, and the positioning structure permitting movement of the guide elements from an essentially central printing position to an upper position (23b) and a lower position (23a). The paper, before being passed between the substrate guide elements, is passed through a paper storage structure, for example by spaced, deflectable rollers which store paper in loop form, from which it can be released. The upper one of the guide elements is strong enough for an operator to stand thereon. When the guide elements are in their upper or lower position, respectively, an operator has access to the lower and upper operating elements of the respective adjacent operating station.
