A slip form paving machine includes a machine frame, a plurality of ground engaging wheels or tracks, and front and rear height adjustable lifting columns supporting the machine frame from the ground engaging wheels or tracks, the lifting columns being adjustable to adjust a longitudinal inclination of the machine frame in a paving direction. A slip form mold is supported from the machine frame for molding a mass of concrete into a formed not yet hardened concrete slab as the paving machine moves forward in the paving direction. An oscillating beam is supported from the machine frame behind the slip form mold for engaging and oscillating transversely to the paving direction upon an upper surface of the formed not yet hardened concrete slab to smooth the upper surface. A roll size sensor is configured to detect a size of a roll of not yet hardened concrete created in front of the oscillating beam.

A dowel bar inserter includes first and second end carriages, a bottom pan assembly configured to engage a top surface of a concrete slab, an insertion beam, and a plurality of insertion forks attached to the insertion beam. First and second insertion actuators support the insertion beam from the first and second end carriages. First and second end suspension actuators support the bottom pan assembly from the end carriages independent of the raising and lowering of the insertion beam relative to the end carriages. Each of the suspension actuators includes associated therewith a suspension actuator extension sensor configured to detect an amount of extension of the respective suspension actuator.

Dowel bar inserter

A paver, in particular a slipform paver, has a machine frame supported by front and rear undercarriages and a paving device for the paving of material. The paver is provided with an apron monitoring device for generating elevation profile data or elevation profile signals describing the elevation profile of the material deposited in the apron of the paving device in a direction transverse to the working direction. A data or signal processing device receives the elevation profile data or signals. The apron monitoring device provides the data needed to allow the material to be spread more evenly across the working width of the paver during the feeding operation by means of a spreading device for spreading the material to be paved in a direction transverse to the working direction and/or to allow the spreading device to be controlled for improved spreading of the material after the paver has been fed.
