An approach for reducing power consumption during data transfer is provided. A period of delayed release of one or more radio resources associated with a data flow is detected. In response to the detection, radio resource reduction information is generated for a data transfer during the period, wherein the radio resource reduction information specifies a reduced allocation of one or more radio resources. Control information is generated for transmission to a mobile station, wherein the control information specifies the radio resource reduction information.

Method and apparatus for reducing power consumption during data transfer

Example embodiments of methods and apparatus for neighboring cell signal measurement and reporting are disclosed. An example method includes operating a first wireless communication cell in accordance with a first radio access technology (RAT). The example method further includes transmitting, to one or more mobile devices in the first wireless communication cell, information regarding one or more neighboring wireless communication cells. The one or more neighboring wireless communication cells are operated in accordance with a second RAT. The example method also includes establishing an active communication channel in the first wireless communication cell with a mobile device of the one or more mobile devices. The example method still further includes receiving capability information of the mobile device, the capability information including an indication if the mobile device is compatible with the second RAT. The example method additionally includes, in the event the mobile device is compatible with the second RAT, providing instructions to the mobile device regarding whether or not to provide measurement reports for signals received from the one or more neighboring cells.

Neighboring cell signal measurement and reporting

There is provided arrangements for controlling and supporting network sharing. A set of common system information which applies to communication networks sharing at least one shared local communication area for communicating with host network elements is prepared. A set of dedicated system information which applies to at least one of the communication networks sharing the at least one shared local communication area is prepared. The dedicated system information is addressed only to host network elements being configured to support sharing of a local communication area. System information including the set of common system information and the set of dedicated system information is transmitted. The common system information includes an information element indicating radio frequency channels used by neighboring local communication areas of the communication networks that share the at least one shared local communication area, said neighboring local communication areas neighboring the at least one shared local communication area.

Arrangements for controlling mobility in a network sharing environment

In accordance with the exemplary embodiments of the invention there is described a method and apparatus to group at least one cell of a network according to at least one characteristic of a physical layer cell identification of the at least one cell, and to signal a representation comprising the at least one characteristic of the grouped at least one cell to a mobile station. In addition, according to another exemplary aspect of the invention there is at least a method and apparatus to receive signaling comprising a representation of a grouped at least one cell of a network, where the representation is according to at least one characteristic of a physical layer cell identification of the at least one cell, and to determine, based on the signaling, whether the grouped at least one cell are to be considered for an operation including at least one of reselection and measurement reporting.

Grouping of cells for efficient neighbor cell information distribution

An approach is provided for providing a reliable transmission of data associated with different traffic types over a common communication session. A temporary block is established between an apparatus and another apparatus. The apparatus multiplexes Radio Link Control (RLC) acknowledged mode data and at least one of RLC unacknowledged mode data and RLC non-persistent mode data. The apparatus then determines to transmit the multiplexed data in the temporary block flow to the other apparatus.

Method and apparatus for multiplexing different traffic types over a common communication session

In the LAPDm a short message service is implemented by pre-emption of every second signalling message when there is a short message to be sent. Same pre-emption mechanism is also needed when the RLC/MAC protocol is used on the data link layer instead of the LAPDm. The mechanism is provided by defining at least two different identities to be used with frames transmitted on the signalling channel; and pre-empting frames on the MAC at least on the basis of the identity relating to a frame. The identities are preferably identified on the basis of the signalling radio bearer of the frame.

RLC/MAC protocol

The invention relates generally to a method and an arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service. The invention further concerns the technology of transferring control information relating to packet data transfer resources on individual packet-switched radio connections at the interface between a transmitting device and a receiving device. It s an objective of this invention to provide a method and a system that offers solutions to the prior art problems. Especially, it is an object of this invention to provide a solution for signalling, which enables the use of more than one connection (TBF) and time slot for packet data transfer in one data transfer direction, and the use of asymmetric resources for uplink/downlink data transfer. The objectives of the invention are fulfilled by providing a procedure, in which the one and same uplink control channel is used for transferring uplink control information, which relates to at least two downlink TBFs. This is preferably achieved by including in the uplink control message information on which downlink time slot the concerned TBF is transferred, assuming the uplink control channel uses an uplink timeslot of which the peer downlink timeslot (i.e. with same timeslot number) is not used by the concerned TBF. It is also preferably achieved by including in a downlink control message information on which uplink time slot control information is transferred corresponding to a determined TBF.
