Photonic units for vector-vector multiplication, matrix-vector multiplication, matrix-matrix multiplication, batch matrix-matrix multiplication, and tensor-tensor multiplication are described. Multiplications are through coherent mixing and square-law detection. There are many dimensions—wavelength, vector mode, quadrature, and three dimensions of space—that can be used to construct photonic accelerators. The encoded input vector or input matrix is fanned out into a desired number of copies and mixed with the corresponding encoded local oscillators containing the weight vectors comprising the weight matrix. Any subset of two (three) dimensions can be used to construct photonic accelerators for matrix-vector (matrix-matrix) multiplications. Multiple dimensions can be combined into a hyperdimension to increase the scalability. Each dimension, each non-overlapping subset of a dimension, or each non-overlapping subset of a hyperdimension, can be used independently to construct a photonic tensor accelerator (PTA) for batch matrix multiplication, or tensor multiplication operations.

Photonic tensor accelerators for artificial neural networks

A power semiconductor waveguide optical amplifier (P-SWA) may include an amplifier waveguide with an invertible core formed from one or more undoped heterogeneous semiconductor layers and one or more cladding layers surrounding one or more sides of the invertible core formed as one or more undoped semiconductor layers. Pump light may be coupled into the amplifier waveguide to induce the population inversion in the invertible core. Signal light may further be coupled into the amplifier waveguide and may be amplified as it propagates through the amplifier waveguide. The signal light may then exit the amplifier waveguide as amplified signal light.

An adaptive system and a method for adjusting a parameter in the adaptive system includes operating an adaptive system with an output signal produced from an input signal applied to an input, in which a parameter with a finite range is determined based on a difference between the output signal and a target output signal. In one example the parameter with the finite range is a fixed-point parameter or an analog parameter. The parameter is accessed from the adaptive system. A probability distribution of the parameter is assigned. The finite range for the parameter is updated based on the probability distribution which has been assigned. The probability distribution function may be updated alone with the finite range of the parameter. The probability distribution may be derived from one or more historical values of the parameter, and a plurality of system parameters belonging to an identical category of data as the parameter.

Adjusting parameters in an adaptive system

A few-mode light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system may include an illumination source to generate an illumination beam, one or more transmission optics to direct at least a portion of the illumination beam within a field of view, one or more collection optics to collect return light from an object in the field of view illuminated by the illumination beam, wherein the collected return light includes a plurality of spatial modes, a few-mode optical amplifier to optically amplify portions of the return light propagating along at least two of the plurality of spatial modes, and a detector configured to convert output light from the few-mode optical amplifier to an output electrical signal.

A non-destructive iterative interferometric tomographic technique for imaging and reconstruction of phase objects as well as objects with complex permittivity and, particularly, to iterative optical diffraction tomographic (iODT) imaging and reconstruction of phase objects with high refractive index (RI) contrast, complex structures, and/or large optical path differences (OPDs) against the background, which cause multiple scattering, and applications thereof.

A mode demultiplexing hybrid (MDH) that integrates mode demultiplexing, local oscillator power splitting, and optical 90-degree hybrid using multi-plane light conversion (MPLC). Reflective cavity and transmissive systems are disclosed. The MDH may fine advantageous application as the optical front end for a coherent receiver in a space-division multiplexing (SDM) system.

An optical fiber system including an optical fiber and an optical grating is provided. The optical fiber is configured to support M mode groups, where differences in effective refractive index between adjacent mode groups are substantially equal. The optical grating is optically coupled to the optical fiber, and has a period inversely proportional to the difference in effective refractive index between adjacent mode groups. The optical grating is configured to couple all adjacent mode groups in the optical fiber.

In one embodiment, an optical system for processing space-multiplexed optical signals includes an input fiber that propagates multiple spatially-separated optical signals, a photonic signal processor that receives the multiple spatially-separated optical signals and simultaneously processes those signals, and an output fiber that receives at least one of the processed signals.

Methods of converting silica to silicon and fabricating silicon photonic crystal fiber (PCF) are disclosed. Silicon photonic crystal fibers made by the fabrication methods are also disclosed. One fabrication method includes: sealing silica PCF and a quantity of magnesium within a container, the quantity of magnesium defined by 2Mg+SiO&#x2192;2MgO+Si; converting silica PCF to a reacted PCF through magnesiothermic reduction; and converting the reacted PCF to the fabricated silicon PCF by selective dissolution of the reacted PCF in an acid. Another fabrication method includes: adding silica PCF and a quantity of solid magnesium to an unsealed container, the quantity of magnesium substantially in excess of that defined by 2Mg+SiO&#x2192;2MgO+Si; converting silica PCF to a reacted PCF through magnesiothermic reduction; and converting the reacted PCF to the fabricated silicon PCF by selective dissolution of the reacted PCF in an acid.

In one embodiment, a system and method for performing single-shot digital holography include an optical hybrid assembly configured to receive a reference beam from a light source and another beam, and a balanced detector comprising multiple sensor arrays that are configured to receive outputs of the optical hybrid assembly and simultaneously measure in-phase and quadrature components of an incoming light wavefront that results from interference between the reference beam and the other beam within the optical hybrid assembly to provide a full set of digital holograms in a single exposure.
