A coupling structure for coupling optical radiation, i.e., light, between an optical fibre and an optical device, e.g., a laser diode or a photodiode. The coupling structure has an optical through-via which guides the optical radiation to or from the optical fibre. Light exiting the fibre travels through a guidance channel so it remains substantially confined to a narrow optical path that mimics the fibre core. Conversely, light enters the fibre after having traveled through the guidance channel. The guidance channel has a first core region, the 'channel core', having first refractive index surrounded by a second region, the 'channel cladding' having a second refractive index smaller than the first refractive index. The coupling structure, including the guidance channel, is preferably made of semiconductor-based material, more preferably of silicon-based material. The guidance channel is preferably silicon oxide. The coupling structure further has a fibre drive-in element, which facilitates insertion and alignment of the optical fibre to the guidance channel.

A modular apparatus for data communication between a distribution network and a residential network is disclosed. The apparatus has a first device adapted to interface a distribution network, at least one second device adapted to interface a residential network and to be mechanically and electrically connected to the first device, and at least one interconnecting lock adapted to keep the first device and the at least one second device firmly secured to each other and to activate electrical supply between the first device and the at least one second device.

A device for connecting an optical fibre has a connector associated with at least one optical fibre and can be inserted into a receptacle so as to realize an optical connection along an optical connection axis at an angle of 20&#xb0; between the at least one optical fibre and at least one connection component housed in the receptacle. The connector has a main body for holding a first portion of an end part of at least one optical fibre and to let a second portion of the end part of the optical fibre project. A cover is slidably associated with the main body. The cover houses the second portion of the end part of optical fibre and leaves at least one bare end of the second portion of the end part completely uncovered.

A network for distributing signals to a plurality of user apparatuses having a distribution unit with a plurality of ports, and a plurality of optical-fiber cables connected to the ports and suitable to make the plurality of ports of the distribution unit communicate with the plurality of user apparatuses. At least one of the plurality of optical-fiber cables is an electrically terminated optical cable having an optical cable with a single-mode optical fiber and an opto-electronic end portion mechanically and permanently connected to an end of the optical cable, and the opto-electronic end portion has an opto-electronic conversion device having an optic port optically aligned with and mechanically connected to, an end of the single-mode optical fiber.

To produce a fiber laser ( ) a double-cladding active fiber ( ) doped with Yb is predisposed to receive, near a first end ( ), a UV radiation suitable to write a first Bragg grating; during the writing process, a scanned pumping radiation is fed to the first end of the active fiber in order to excite an amplified stimulated emission between the first grating and the reflecting surface of a second end ( ) of the active fiber, previously cut and cleaned, and to consequently induce a laser emission from the active fiber; the optical power of the laser emission is measured and processed to obtain the laser efficiency; when a maximum value of the efficiency is reached, the writing process is stopped; similar steps are used to write a second grating near the second end ( ) of the active fiber.

Method for producing a fiber laser

An optical amplifying unit includes an input for the input optical signals and an output for the output of the optical signals. A single-mode active fiber codoped with Er and Yb is optically connected to the input and the output and adapted to amplify the optical signals. A first pump source generates a first pump radiation including an excitation wavelength for Er, and a second pump source for generates a second pump radiation including an excitation wavelength for Yb. A first optical coupler optically couples the first pump radiation into the core of the active fiber in a co-propagating direction with respect to signal direction, and a second optical coupler optically couples the second pump radiation into the core of the active fiber in a counter-propagating direction with respect to signal direction.
