Marked mineral oils containing basic dyes which have at least two, optionally substituted, amino groups and which, on addition of a protogenic acid and, optionally, a metal halide, experience a bathochromic shift of their absorption maximum and an increase in absorbance, and a method of marking mineral oils with basic dyes.

Monoazo and disazo dyes having an unsubstituted or substituted aniline or p-aminoazobenzene as diazo component and an N-substituted .beta.-naphthylamine of six to eighteen carbon atoms in the N-substituent as coupling component. Preferred diazo components are phenyl, tolyl, phenylazophenyl and tolylazotolyl, and preferred coupling components are provided by .beta.-naphthylamine which is N-monosubstituted by n-hexyl, n-octyl, .beta.-ethylhexyl, 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl, tridecyl, .beta.-ethylhexoxypropyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl or phenylethyl. The dyes are eminently suitable for the coloring of for example mineral oils, gasoline, fats and waxes because of their excellent solubilities.

Concentrated, storage-stable solutions of alkylbenzenesulfonates, with alkyl chains of 8 to 18 carbon atoms, of basic dyes, in normally liquid alcohols, glycols and glycol ethers. The solutions are particularly suitable for producing waterfast prints, colorations, script and markings.

Isotridecylammonium salts of chromium or cobalt 1:2 complex azo dyes, their production and their use as colorants for printing inks and surface coatings. The salts are distinguished by particularly good solubility in organic solvents.
