A sensor element includes a sensor arrangement and a heating arrangement. The sensor arrangement can be heated by the heating arrangement. The heating arrangement has an electrically conductive heating structure which is at least partially electrically insulated from the sensor arrangement by electrical insulation having an electrically insulating material. The electrically insulating material has gas-tight sintered particles which have forsterite particles, spinel particles, or a mixture of forsterite particles and spinel particles. Such particles may have an average size D50 of less than or equal to about 200 nm.

A sensor element having a layered construction and configured to detect a physical property of a gas or a liquid includes a functional component situated in the interior, which functional component is connected electrically to a conductor element, which conductor element extends up to the outer surface or up into the surroundings of the sensor element. The sensor element has at least one sealing element which adjoins the functional component and/or the conductor element. The conductor element and the at least one sealing element are configured to be gas-tight at least regionally in the interior of the sensor element and are situated in such a way that the functional component is separated gas-tight from the surroundings of the sensor element.

Platinum metal cermet electrodes are described on which the electrochemical reduction of oxygen is made easier compared to known platinum metal cermet electrodes. The ceramic component of a platinum metal cermet electrode contains stabilized ZrOas its main constituent, the composition of the electrode being directed toward reducing its polarization resistance.

A sensor element of a gas sensor is described, this sensor being used to determine the concentration of at least one component of a gas mixture, in particular in exhaust gases of internal combustion engines. It includes at least two electrodes which are situated in an internal gas space which is in direct contact with the gas mixture, the one electrode containing a first material and the second electrode containing a second material. The internal gas space contains a means which acts physically and/or chemically to prevent diffusion of metal between the electrodes.
