A glass element having a thickness from 25 μm to 125 μm, a first primary surface, a second primary surface, and a compressive stress region extending from the first primary surface to a first depth, the region defined by a compressive stress σI of at least about 100 MPa at the first primary surface. Further, the glass element has a stress profile such that it does not fail when it is subject to 200,000 cycles of bending to a target bend radius of from 1 mm to 20 mm, by the parallel plate method. Still further, the glass element has a puncture resistance of greater than about 1.5 kgf when the first primary surface of the glass element is loaded with a tungsten carbide ball having a diameter of 1.5 mm.

Bendable glass stack assemblies, articles and methods of making the same

A glass-based article including a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface defining a thickness (t) of about 3 millimeters or less (e.g., about 1 millimeter or less), and a stress profile, wherein all points of the stress profile between a thickness range from about 0·t up to 0.3·t and from greater than about 0.7·t to t, comprise a tangent with a slope having an absolute value greater than about 0.1 MPa/micrometer. In some embodiments, the glass-based article includes a non-zero metal oxide concentration that varies along at least a portion of the thickness (e.g., 0·t to about 0.3·t) and a maximum central tension of less than about 71.5/√(t) (MPa). In some embodiments, the concentration of metal oxide or alkali metal oxide decreases from the first surface to a point between the first surface and the second surface and increases from the point to the second surface. The concentration of the metal oxide may be about 0.05 mol % or greater or about 0.5 mol % or greater throughout the thickness. Methods for forming such glass-based articles are also disclosed.

Fusion-formable glass-based articles including a metal oxide concentration gradient

An article is described herein that includes: a substrate having a glass, glass-ceramic or a ceramic composition and comprising a primary surface; and a protective film disposed on the primary surface. The protective film comprises a thickness of greater than 1.5 microns and a maximum hardness of greater than 15 GPa at a depth of 500 nanometers, as measured on the film disposed on the substrate. Further, the protective film comprises a metal oxynitride that is graded such that an oxygen concentration in the film varies by 1.3 or more atomic %. In addition, the substrate comprises an elastic modulus less than an elastic modulus of the film.

Glass, glass-ceramic and ceramic articles with graded protective coatings having hardness and strength

A glass-based article may include from about 45 mol. % to about 80 mol. % SiO; from about 0 mol. % to about 10 mol. % NaO; less than about 5 mol. % KO; a non-zero amount of AlO; and. an amorphous phase and a crystalline phase. The article may further in include a stress profile comprising a surface compressive stress (CS) and a maximum central tension (CT). A ratio of LiO (mol. %) to RO (mol. %) in the article is from about 0.5 to about 1, where RO is the sum of LiO, NaO, and KO in the article. CT may be greater than or equal to about 50 MPa and less than about 100 MPa. CS may be greater than 2.0·CT. A depth of compression (DOC) of the stress profile may be greater than or equal to 0.14·t and less than or equal to 0.25·t, where t is the thickness of the article.

Glasses and glass ceramics including a metal oxide concentration gradient

Disclosed herein are coated articles which may include a substrate and an optical coating that includes one or more layers of deposited material. At least a portion of the optical coating may include a residual compressive stress of more than 100 MPa. The coated article may include a strain-to-failure of 0.4% or more as measured by a Ring-on-Ring Tensile Testing Procedure. The optical coating may include a maximum hardness of 8 GPa or more and an average photopic transmission of 50% or greater.

Embodiments of a glass-based article including a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface defining a thickness (t) of about 3 millimeters or less (e.g., about 1 millimeter or less), and a stress profile, wherein all points of the stress profile between a thickness range from about 0·t up to 0.3·t and from greater than about 0.7·t up to t, comprise a tangent with a slope having an absolute value greater than about 0.1 MPa/micrometer, are disclosed. In some embodiments, the glass-based article includes a non-zero metal oxide concentration that varies along at least a portion of the thickness (e.g., 0·t to about 0.3·t) and a maximum central tension in the range from about 80 MPa to about 100 MPa. In some embodiments, the concentration of metal oxide or alkali metal oxide decreases from the first surface to a value at a point between the first surface and the second surface and increases from the value to the second surface. The concentration of the metal oxide may be about 0.05 mol % or greater or about 0.5 mol % or greater throughout the thickness. Methods for forming such glass-based articles are also disclosed.

Glass-based articles including a metal oxide concentration gradient

Making a glass-based article having a coating and a target shape which comprises a planar central portion and a perimeter portion which borders at least part of the planar central portion and extends out of the plane of the planar central portion, the perimeter portion having a perimeter edge and a target edge-to-opposite edge dimension. The method includes forming a glass-based part to provide an initial formed part having an initial three-dimensional shape that is different from the target shape for at least the target edge-to-opposite edge dimension. Applying a coating to the initial formed part to form the glass-based article having a coating, the coating imparting a stress to the initial molded part that causes a calculated, warp-induced change to the initial shape.

Methods of making coated glass-based parts

One or more aspects of the disclosure pertain to an article including a film disposed on a glass substrate, which may be strengthened, where the interface between the film and the glass substrate is modified, such that the article has an improved average flexural strength, and the film retains key functional properties for its application. Some key functional properties of the film include optical, electrical and/or mechanical properties. The bridging of a crack from one of the film or the glass substrate into the other of the film or the glass substrate can be suppressed by inserting a nanoporous crack mitigating layer between the glass substrate and the film.

Articles with a low-elastic modulus layer and retained strength

A method for generating various stress profiles for chemically strengthened glass. An alkali aluminosilicate glass is brought into contact with an ion exchange media such as, for example, a molten salt bath containing an alkali metal cation that is larger than an alkali metal cation in the glass. The ion exchange is carried out at temperatures greater than about 420&#xb0; C. and at least about 30&#xb0; C. below the anneal point of the glass.

Method for achieving a stress profile in a glass

A stack assembly is provided that includes a glass layer having a thickness, a first and second primary surface and a compressive stress region extending from the second primary surface to a first depth; and a second layer coupled to the second primary surface. The glass layer is characterized by: an absence of failure when the layer is held at a bend radius from about 3 to 20 mm, a puncture resistance of greater than about 1.5 kgf when the second primary surface is supported by (i) an &#x2dc;25 &#x3bc;m thick PSA and (ii) an &#x2dc;50 &#x3bc;m thick PET layer, and the first primary surface is loaded with a stainless steel pin having a flat bottom with a 200 &#x3bc;m diameter, a pencil hardness of at least 8H, and a neutral axis within the glass layer located between the second primary surface and half of the first thickness.

Bendable glass stack assemblies and methods of making the same

A glass element having a thickness from 25 &#x3bc;m to 125 &#x3bc;m, a first primary surface, a second primary surface, and a compressive stress region extending from the first primary surface to a first depth, the region defined by a compressive stress GI of at least about 100 MPa at the first primary surface. Further, the glass element has a stress profile such that it does not fail when it is subject to 200,000 cycles of bending to a target bend radius of from 1 mm to 20 mm, by the parallel plate method. Embodiments of a article including include a substrate and a patterned coating are provided. In one or more embodiments, when a strain is applied to the article, the article exhibits a failure strain of 0.5% or greater. Patterned coating may include a particulate coating or may include a discontinuous coating. The patterned coating of some embodiments may cover about 20% to about 75% of the surface area of the substrate. Methods for forming such articles are also provided.
