A filter system and method of filtering a feed liquid utilizing a combined plurality of filter assemblies. Each filter assembly includes a filter housing, a filter cartridge and a spiral passageway for imparting secondary flow currents, particularly Dean-Flow currents, to fluid flowing within the spiral passageways to prevent particulate build-up on filter surfaces so as to extend filter life and duration between replacement. The filter system can be operated within positive or negative pressure filtration processes. A dual-stage filtration process utilizing a cap filter and a cylindrical depth filter is also disclosed.

System and method of fluid filtration utilizing cross-flow currents

The invention discloses an apparatus for filtration of water from hydrocarbons comprised of a fresh-feed inlet, a first dead end filter, that is hydrophobic, a second sweeping-flow filter, that is hydrophobic, a common housing containing both the first and second filters, a system for the recirculation of the retentate, a chamber for water settling, and an outlet for clean fuel permeate. This invention takes advantage of the properties of the functional groups of a surfactant, by using the surfactant to allow a hydrophobic medium to attract water, attach the water molecules to the hydrophobic medium, and then allow for agglomeration of the water molecules, which finally become large enough to detach and be swept away by the sweeping-flow. This invention can thus be used to remove high concentrations of water, up to 5%, in hydrocarbons, while allowing a high flow rate by preventing blockage of the final filter by water.

Method and apparatus for separating emulsified water from hydrocarbons

Method and apparatus for separating emulsified water from fuel

Rotary disc filtration devices and filtration processes using those devices are disclosed. The devices have one or more fluid filtration gaps into which fluid to be filtered into permeate and retentate is placed. Each fluid filtration gap is defined by a disc and a filter, one of which rotates with respect to the other. The filter is carried on a filter support member. Fresh feed is introduced to each fluid filtration gap near the longitudinal axis of the shaft on which the discs are rotated. Holes through the disc in the active area of the disc, which is the area opposite the filter, counteract the tendency of the disc and filter to move towards one another.

Rotary disc filtration device with means to reduce axial forces

A cleaning process to remove soil using cleaners exhibiting cloud point behavior (i.e., have a cloud point) and/or in which the cleaner can be recycled is disclosed. The cleaning mixture can be an aqueous cleaning mixture. The temperature can be adjusted so that the cleaning mixture is contacted with the object to be cleaned at a temperature at or above the cloud point temperature, and the temperature and/or composition of spent cleaning mixture can be adjusted so that it is processed to form a soil-enriched stream and a soil-depleted stream while it is below its cloud point temperature. Processing to form the soil-enriched and soil-depleted streams can involve adjusting the system so that at steady state ##EQU1## where C.sub.Washer is the concentration of cleaner in the spent cleaning mixture and C.sub.Washer Target is the desired concentration of cleaner in the cleaning mixture prior to contacting the object to be cleaned. Desirably a hyperhydrophilic membrane is used in a filtration process to form the soil-enriched and soil-depleted streams from the spent cleaning solution.

Cleaning processes using cleaners exhibiting cloud point behavior

Rotary disc filtration devices and filtration processes using those devices are disclosed. The devices have one or more fluid filtration gaps into which fluid to be filtered into permeate and retentate is placed. Each fluid filtration gap is defined by a disc and a filter, one of which rotates with respect to the other. The filter is carried on a filter member. The discs and interleaved filter members may be suspended from the top of the device, the top may rest on a vessel containing the fluid to be filtered, the discs may be attached to a single shaft for rotation, and the filter members may be suspended from a sleeve around the shaft, which sleeve keeps the filters centered with respect to the discs. Removal of the device's top removes the discs and filter members together, facilitating maintenance. Each filter member may have a peripheral lip and the lips of adjacent filter members may be sufficiently close to one another to substantially restrict the flow of retentate out of the fluid filtration gap. Retentate flowing out of each fluid filtration gap may be directed into the vessel to counteract the tendency of the fluid in the vessel to rotate in the same direction as the discs are rotated, or the retentate may be recycled directly to the fluid filtration gaps. The liquid level in the vessel may be held constant using a dual-pipe system and three-head peristaltic pump.
