Carts with aerofoils move around an elongated, looped track under the force of the wind. Carts are connected to each other in a train on the windward side of the track and collectively rotate gear wheels at the side of the track, via racks mounted on the carts that engage with the gears. The gears ultimately power an electrical generator mounted in the base of the system. The system has multiple tracks stacked one above the other and mounted on a rotatable structure that can be turned to optimize wind energy harvesting. The angle of the aerofoils is adjusted at different locations of the cart on the track when desired. Intervening buffer carts without aerofoils are used to space the carts with aerofoils. The speed of the carts is a fraction of the wind speed.

An apparatus includes an AC-to-DC power supply, with a positive terminal operatively coupled to two two-wire pairs of an Ethernet port to provide a first and second power path over a structured cable. A negative terminal is operatively coupled to a third two-wire pair of the Ethernet port to complete the first power path. Power path control logic has an input port operative to receive a two-wire input signal from an external device, and is operatively coupled to the negative terminal of the AC-to-DC power supply output, and to a fourth two-wire pair of the Ethernet port to complete the second power path. The power path control logic is operative to disconnect the negative terminal of the AC-to-DC power supply from the fourth two-wire pair of the Ethernet port in response to a two-wire input signal received at the input port, to disconnect the second power path.

Access control apparatus and method therefor

An apparatus includes a plurality of power distribution control output channels operatively coupled to at least one power source, and comprising an access control input from an access control device, and a control output for a controlled device. A controller receives an access control input signal for each power distribution control output channel and provides a control signal to each power distribution control output channel such that each power distribution control output channel provides a control output signal according to requirements of a corresponding controlled device. The controller can individually isolate one or more power distribution control output channels from the at least one power source such that the control output signal is removed from the corresponding controlled device, while any other power distribution control output channels coupled to the same power source continues to operate without interruption.

Networked, channelized power distribution, monitor and control for security and life safety applications

An apparatus includes a zero steady state error regulator with a first input terminal operatively coupled to an isolated power supply primary voltage. A PWM (pulse width modulation) generator is operative to generate two identical PWM signals, each having a duty ratio proportional to the primary voltage. The PWM generator has an input terminal operatively coupled to the zero steady state error regulator output terminal, and has a first output terminal operatively coupled to a second input terminal of the zero steady state error regulator to a provide a feedback signal. An optical coupler has an input terminal operatively coupled to a second output terminal of the PWM generator. A scaling circuit has an input terminal operatively coupled to the optical coupler output terminal and has a scaling circuit output terminal to provide a scaled PWM output signal having a duty ratio that is linearly proportional to the primary voltage.

Apparatus and method for measuring primary voltage from the secondary side of an isolated power supply

A method of operation includes receiving, by a power supply with battery backup, a battery test command from a user interface on a remote device, switching the power supply to the battery backup in response to the battery test command, monitoring voltage and discharge current of the battery, determining that the battery has reached a threshold capacity due the battery discharge, terminating the battery discharge test and switching the power supply off of the battery backup. The battery backup test command received may be a one-click selection input at a user interface on the remote device where the battery test command is sent to the power supply in response to the one-click selection input. An apparatus that performs the method of operation is also disclosed.

Apparatus and method for a networked power management system with one-click remote battery discharge testing

A cost-effective system architecture and apparatus for programmable automatic power supply testing. The system utilizes board level interface between various system testing modules and an Automatic Test Controller (ATC). The ATC receives coded test requests from the software on an industrial PC and control the various testing modules inside ATC to execute the tests. Test results were sent back to the PC and saved in a result file. A single industrial PC can control two or more ATC's and test two or more power supply units simultaneously. The ATC based test system is lower cost than the conventional Automatic Test Equipment which uses device level interface and standardized test devices.

Apparatus and method for a networked power management system for security and life safety applications

A method and apparatus for measuring current by a single sensor for two motor phases driven by first and second set of switches to drive respective first and second phases of a motor under control of PWM signals. A first stepincludes reading a duty cycle of each winding drive current. A next step configuresthe PWM signals to provide at least one timing window wherein at least of one of the windings of the motor is being driven while the other winding is not being driven, and to provide a relative timing offset of approximately one-half cycle between the pulse width modulation signals driving a first winding and a second winding of the motor. A next stepincludes gating the switches with the configured PWM signals. A next stepincludes sampling the current of the at least one of the windings with a single sensor.

Current sensing in a two-phase motor

A method and system for detecting faults in an electric power-assisted steering system includes determining a voltage vector of an electric power-assisted steering motor and measuring a current vector of the motor. Acceptable angular relationships are defined between the voltage vector and the current vector, which are then compared to find a fault if the angle does not meet the acceptable angular relationship. Additionally, motor direction and position can also be used against an angular check of the voltage and/or current vector. Similarly, torque direction can be used. In this way, several different faults can be determined dynamically under transient conditions.

Fault detection in an electric power-assisted steering system

A method for measuring the current in each phase of a three-phase motor ( ) by the sensor ( ), the motor ( ) being controlled by a plurality of switching devices (S -S ) that receive pulse width modulation signals from a controller ( ). In one embodiment, a first and second sampling window (t and t ) are monitored. When both the first and second sampling windows (t and t ) are less than a minimum sampling window (mw), the voltage pulse trains associated with the highest output (V_h) and the lowest output (V_l) are shifted to form a first modified sampling window (t &prime;) and a modified second sampling window (t &prime;). When the first sampling window (t ) is less than the minimum sampling window and the second sampling window (t ) is greater than the minimum sampling window (mw), then the voltage pulse train associated with the highest output (V_h) and/or the middle output (V_m) may be shifted to form the first and second modified sampling windows (t &prime; and t &prime;). When the first sampling window (t ) is greater than the minimum sampling window (mw) and the second sampling window (t ) is less than the minimum sampling window (mw), then the voltage pulse train associated with the lowest output (V_l) and/or the middle output (V_m) is shifted to form the first and second modified sampling windows (t &prime; and t &prime;). The method may then sample a first current and a second current during the first and second modified sampling windows (t &prime; and t &prime;), respectively. The third current may be calculated based on the sampling of the first and second currents.

Procedure for measuring the current in each phase of a three-phase device via single current sensor

A dimming ballast apparatus comprises at least one power line dimming control input and at least one non-power-line dimming control input. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus comprises a firing-angle-to-pulse-width-modulation converter responsive to the power line dimming control input, a voltage-to-pulse-width-modulation converter responsive to the non-power-line dimming control input, a low-pass filter responsive to the firing-angle-to-pulse-width-modulation converter and the voltage-to-pulse-width-modulation converter, and a dimming ballast circuit having a dim level command input responsive to the low-pass filter.

Dual control dimming ballast

A line dimmer has a limited maximum firing angle to limit a total harmonic distortion within a powering signal. A dimming ballast generates a pulse width modulated signal based on a firing angle of the powering signal, generates a dimming command signal based on the pulse width modulated signal, and dims a lamp based on the dimming command signal. The maximum firing angle may be limited to 30 degrees, 25 degrees, or 20 degrees, for example, to limit a resulting total harmonic distortion.
