Systems and methods for providing cognitive therapy to a patient are provided, which include a head mounted device wearable by the patient, a display configured to present one or more cognitive game scenes to the patient, one or more controllers for interacting with the cognitive training scenes, a cognitive engagement detection device configured to detect cognitive engagement of the patient and generate data indicative of the cognitive engagement of the patient, and a processor. The processor determines a level of cognitive engagement of the patient based at least in part on the data generated by the cognitive engagement detection device, determines performance of the patient interacting with the one or more cognitive training scenes based on information received from the one or more controllers, and determines cognitive improvement of the patient based on the cognitive engagement, cognitive medication taken, and the performance of the patient.

Medication enhancement systems and methods for cognitive benefit

The present disclosure integrates an actuated tilting rehabilitation table, video tracking of the patient arm and opposite shoulder, a low-friction forearm support with grasping force sensing, remote data transmission and additional weighing means, one or more large displays, a computer and a plurality of simulation exercises, such as video games. The patient can be monitored by a local or remote clinician. The table tilts in order to increase exercise difficulty due to gravity loading on the patient's arm and shoulder. In one embodiment, the actuated tilting table tilts in four degrees of freedom.

Rehabilitation systems and methods

A system provides bi-manual game-based integrative therapy combining cognitive training with mild upper body physical exercising during game play. The system includes a pair of interfaces tracking a user's arms in 3D and detect trigger pressing. Custom therapeutic game controllers that detect grasping force, finger extension, 3D hand position, skin temperature and pulse may be used. Using one of these interfaces the patient plays a series of custom games displayed on a laptop, medical grade workstation, or other computer platform. The whole therapeutic system may be integrated on a medical cart, so to make the system mobile and easier to place in a clinical setting. Games were designed to improve motor control, shoulder strength, finger and arm range of motion, task sequencing, focusing, decision making (executive function), short term and long term visual/auditory memory, and were progressed in difficulty over 6 to 8 weeks of therapy. This therapy reduces depression.

Bimanual integrative virtual rehabilitation system and methods

The majority of cognitive virtual reality (VR) applications have been for therapy, and not cognitive screening/scoring. Provided herein is the BrightScreener&#x2122; and its first pilot feasibility study for evaluating elderly with various degrees of cognitive impairment. BrightScreener is a portable (laptop-based) serious-gaming system which incorporates a bimanual game interface for more ecological 3D interaction with virtual worlds. A pilot study determined that BrightScreener is able to differentiate levels of cognitive impairment based solely on game performance, as well as to evaluate the technology acceptance by the target population. Subsequent group analysis of the Pearson correlation coefficient showed a high degree of correlation between the subjects' MMSE scores and their Composite Game Scores (0.90, |P|&#x3c;0.01). Despite the small sample size (n=11), results suggest that serious-gaming strategies can be used as a digital technique to stratify levels of Cognitive Impairment. This may be an alternative to conventional standardized scoring for Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia, especially for patients with hearing and speech deficits.

Virtual rehabilitation serious games have gained increasing clinical acceptance in the therapy of large patient populations (stroke and traumatic brain injury). This is due to their ability to motivate the patient, as well as intrinsic large number of movement repetitions they generate. These repetitions are key to inducing brain plasticity and facilitating patient recovery. Unfortunately, bi-manual therapy, while potentially more efficacious, is less developed at this time. We present a novel system and method, for bi-manual game-based integrative therapy that combines physical and cognitive training in integrative game play sessions. It is built around the new Razer Hydra Game interface that track's the patient's arms in 3D and detects trigger pressing. A series of custom games designed to improve focusing, decision making (executive function), short term and long term memory, are played with progressive difficulty.

Bimanual integrative virtual rehabilitation systems and methods

A modular, instrumented rehabilitation table and method of rehabilitation are disclosed. The table top can have a low friction top, a high friction bottom, a hollow section and no legs. An electronic controller is embedded in the hollow section of the table top. A first tilt sensor is embedded in the hollow section of the table top so as to sense tilt on a first axis. A second tilt sensor is embedded in the hollow section of the table top so as to sense tilt on a second axis. A tracking circuit, which can include a plurality of sensors arranged in a matrix format is provided. These can be embedded in the hollow section of the table top or can be atop the top surface of the table. A power supply embedded in the hollow section of the table top is provided. A communication circuit attached to the table top and electrically connected to the electronic controller is provided. The electronic controller sends a transmission signal including signals from the first tilt sensor, the second tilt sensor and the tracking circuit to the communication circuit which transmits the transmission signal.

Instrumented therapy table and system

Systems and methods for treating pain are described. Systems and methods for treating pain using video games, tilt tables and bio-sensors are described wherein the level of the video game is controlled by a computer based on the feedback from a patient. Corresponding systems are also disclosed.

System and method for pain reduction

The present invention provides method and apparatus to perform combined cognitive and motor rehabilitation on a computerized non-portable system or on single portable device. A patient can play a variety of games that require the patient to perform a variety of memory exercises which involve physical exertion. The activities of the patient are monitored with pattern analysis software which provides feedback to the patient. The feedback can include voice synthesis, video guidance, progression messages etc. Patient data obtained while the patient is performing each of the memory exercises is stored locally on a database module and then uploaded to a cloud server. A remote psychologist/psychiatrist monitors the patient by logging into the same cloud, and updating cognition exercises. The same therapist can have live chats with the patient for further interaction and coaching.

Combined cognitive and physical therapy

The present invention relates to a system and method for periodic evaluation and telerehabilitation in which a portable device is adapted to be held or coupled to a body part. For example, the portable device can be a cell phone. The body part can be, for example, the hand, ankle, torso, forearm or upper arm. An animated or virtual reality sequence forming a videogame runs or the portable device. Upon interaction of the user with the videogame, movement of the body part is captured as exercise data. The exercise data can be forwarded and stored at a remote clinical server. The system provides monitoring and scheduling of a therapy session by a clinician/doctor/therapist to control the exercises, length and/or difficulty of the exercises based on recorded data. In one embodiment, vital signs or body temperature are monitored by sensors on the portable device or by vital sign monitors associated with the user. The vital sign data can be synchronized with the exercise data at the remote clinical server, and used to improve patient safety during home therapy sessions.

Periodic evaluation and telerehabilitation systems and methods

The present invention relates to a force feedback and sensing system for a hand in which an actuator system and sensing system is coupled to a palm base attached to the hand or a glove. The actuator system includes double acting actuators which provide force feedback against digits of the hand to simulate a real experience a user would have if directly manipulating a real object. The actuators are rotatably mounted to the palm base through a two degrees of freedom rotation joint.

Hand force feedback and sensing system

The invention relates to a method and system for individually exercising one or more parameters of hand movement such as range, speed, fractionation and strength in a virtual reality environment and for providing performance-based interaction with the user to increase user motivation while exercising. The present invention can be used for rehabilitation of neuromotor disorders, such as a stroke. A first input device senses position of digits of the hand of the user while the user is performing an exercise by interacting with a virtual image. A second input device provides force feedback to the user and measures position of the digits of the hand while the user is performing an exercise by interacting with a virtual image. The virtual images are updated based on targets determined for the user's performance in order to provide harder or easier exercises.

Method and apparatus for rehabilitation of neuromotor disorders

The present invention relates to a system for rehabilitating an ankle in which a mobile platform receives a patient's foot. The mobile platform can be moved in six degrees of freedom. The position and orientation of the mobile platform is measured in relation to the fixed platform in six degrees of freedom. The force exerted by the foot against the mobile platform is measured in six degrees of freedom. The measured position and measured force are forwarded to an electronic interface and fed to a programmable computer. The programmable computer determines desired force feedback to be applied by the controller interface to the mobile platform. The desired feedback signal moves the mobile platform to a desired position or applies a desired force or torque to the mobile platform. The rehabilitation system can include simulation of virtual objects which can be moved by the user to simulate an exercise. For example, the virtual reality simulation can include exercises for balance, flexibility and strength. The system can be remotely controlled in a telerehabilitation environment.

Ankle rehabilitation system

A rehabilitation system employs a force feedback system, such as a force feedback glove, to simulate virtual deformable objects. Prior to rehabilitation, the patient places his or her hand in a sensing glove which measures the force exertable by the patient's digits. Information from the sensing glove is received by an interface and transmitted to a computer where the information can be used to diagnose the patient's manual capability. The computer generates rehabilitation control signals for a force feedback glove. The patient places his or her hand in the force feedback glove and attempts to bring the digits together as though grasping the virtual object. The force feedback glove resists the squeezing movement of the digits in a manner that simulates the tactile feel of the virtual object. The force exerted by the fingers of the patient is fed back to the computer control system where it can be recorded and/or used to modify future rehabilitation control signals. The basic concept of rehabilitation in virtual environment with force feedback can also be applied to other appendages of the human body including arms, legs, neck, knees, elbows and other articulated joints.

Integrated virtual reality rehabilitation system

An actuator system provides force feedback to a master support. A first, second and third digit support are connectable by a finger mount to the thumb, index and middle, and ring digits, respectively. First, second, third and fourth actuators comprising pneumatic cylinders extend between the first, second, third and fourth digit supports and an 'L' shaped palm support mountable on the palm of the glove. Sensors are mounted to the pneumatic cylinders to provide electrical signals on the positioning of the fingers. The signals are forwarded by a stand alone feature to a host computer. The host computer computes the positioning of the finger and provides feedback through interface to the first, second and third actuators. Azimuthal mounts connect the first, second, third and fourth actuators to the palm support for increased movement of the digits.
