In an embodiment, an aspheric IOL for use in a pseudophakic ocular system has no inherent spherical aberration. In an embodiment, an aspheric IOL for use in a pseudophakic ocular system has a controlled amount of inherent negative spherical aberration such that the IOL induces no spherical aberration in a converging wavefront from a cornea passing through the lens. An embodiment of the invention is directed to a family of aspheric IOLs made up of any two or more member aspheric IOLs each having different spherical aberration values and different lens shape factors. A lens constant, such as the well known A-constant, is kept constant throughout the family of lenses. An embodiment of the invention is directed to a multi-component accommodating intraocular lens (A-IOL). In a particular embodiment, the A-IOL introduces substantially no residual spherical aberration to a wavefront incident upon and passing through the A-IOL.

In one embodiment, an amorphous posterior mold comprising a non-critical surface having a controlled radius of curvature is used to produce molded articles. Methods and devices to control polymerization

The invention relates to the determination of higher-order aberrations of an optical element over an optical zone that is larger than the typically limited measured zone over which the aberrations are measured. This is accomplished by apparatus, systems, and methods in which, preferably, the Zernike data from an aberration measurement is fit to a conic function. The conic function smoothly and continuously increases or decreases between the measured zone and the optical zone allowing the extrapolated data to accurately determine the aberrations over the optical zone. According to the invention, a plurality of independent conic plus piston sections that vary azimuthally can very accurately describe a wavefront aberration composed of defocus, astigmatism, spherical aberration, secondary astigmatism, and tetrafoil. The description of primary coma and trefoil will not be as good because they vary with the 3 order of the radial component. However, the description error is relatively small. A tilt term can be added to account for the tilt component of the coma and trefoil terms.

Method and apparatus relating to the optical zone of an optical element

An embodiment of the invention is directed to a method for determining an anterior or posterior surface parameter of an ophthalmic correcting surface (e.g., custom contact lens &ldquo;CCL,&rdquo; customized IOL, custom inlay, customized corneal surface) from a wavefront aberration measurement of an eye. A preferred embodiment relates to determining an anterior surface parameter of a dry, CCL designed to operate at 555 nm. An algorithm sets forth the method comprising misalignment correction, chromatic aberration correction, and power shift correction due to differences between aberration measurement wavelength and peak vision wavelength, and differences between aberration measurement location and aberration correction location. A device readable medium is the preferable vehicle for the algorithm.

A calibration component for use in calibrating and certifying the accuracy of an ophthalmic wavefront sensor comprises a monolithic, plano-convex refractive optic having known amounts of one or more selected aberrations induced by the spherical, axisymmetric aspherical, or non-axisyrmmetric aspherical convex surface. An eye model system for remotely predicting the in-vivo performance of a vision altering optic includes a representative cornea, a dispersion medium, and a retinal surface. The corneal surfaces provide anatomical shape, optical power, and higher order aberration content. The dispersion medium mimics chromatic dispersion in an actual eye. The retinal surface is moveable to provide selected defocus. A humidity and temperature enclosure may be provided. Model eye elements can be tilted or decentered to simulate actual conditions. An associated method for remotely measuring the performance of a vision altering optic to predict its performance in-vivo includes making topography, wavefront, interferometry, PSF, MTF, or other optical and/or physical measurements of the model eye system with and without the optic in combination.
